Just got a new PC, with 2x 512 MB JetRam DDR2-800 dimms.

I have 2 old 512 MB DDR2-533 dimms lying around.

What will be the effect of putting them in on gaming (of which I do little).

I reckon they'd help to speed up the system in general, BUT, then I'm pretty happy with my system's performance as is.

System specs:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 - 3600+
Gigabyte GeForce 6100 motherboard
Gigabyte GeForce 7600GS graphics
2x 512 MB DDR2-800
250 GB SATA2 drive

Thanks Rikus,

What will be the overall effect though? (Insofar as I don't work with large graphics or video files)

faster load times etc... 2GB DDR533 is better than 1GB DDR1066 even.

Gotta disagree.
If you utilize the whole memory by doing video editing etc then maybe.
In normal operations it will, in fact, slow down the system.

no games load and play better with 2GB ram. Try FarCry on 512, 1GB then 2GB. 2GB has way quicker load times and has no disk thrashing. Sure Spi, 3DM and Aquamark are better with DDR1066, but games and actual apps are far better off with more RAM.

I know this first hand having overclocked for years on end and gaming and into audio production as well. Ram speed is very overrated particularly with Core2 systems.

hmmm... i agree with Shocg on this one, the simple reason would be because if one has more ram that means there will be more of the game for example on the ram just ready to go on it's way to the cpu, more speed means that this will happed faster but it's not fast enough to do better then the 2 gig ram
