I agree it was kinda cool to have the car... something about being able to just open the hood and tinker with everything knowing that nothing will break and cost you money, you can open a brand new airbox and drill holes in to to make it sound better and I know I can get another airbox if I mess it up... you cant do that with other cars or the competitors...

It has its bad parts, hi risk and maybe the increasing price is the worst parts of the car...

Thats fine when you're spending R30k on a car but you'dbe quite a fool to forfeit any service/warranty by drilling holes into engine components on a R100k car.

The Citi WAS a good car ... 30 years ago. The only reason why its sold still is that we do not have the same strict safety & environmental policies. The reason why people still buy them is that the consumer is either looking for something cheap and (fairly) reliable or they are brand blinkered who would buy dog poo if it had a VW badge on it. Both parties don't realise that if they looked a bit further there are much better safer options which are a lot less appealing to criminals.

Damn...I MUST remind myself that I am dealing with people who know it all when I come on here.

Of course, I am a total idiot, just like every other South African who drives a VW.

Nah its a Citi, drilling holes into the bottom of the airbox doesnt affect the warranty!:)

You that know they're desperate when they list things like rev counter, manual door mirrors and front disc brakes as standard equipment!

Fixed.

There's nothing wrong with the rest of the range which were all designed in this millennium.

What about putting in a proper induction system?

Is sounds to fake... Nothing worst than a standard citi with an induction...

De trumpet the airbox, get a K&N flatbed filter and 2 holes in the bottom of the airbox and it sounds perfect, not to rough and fake, just right!!!

Oh and theres a proven 3kw atw added!!

The added power comes from the performance filter, not the holes. And with the holes, you're actually allowing in hot air which reduces power. Without the holes you'll get better performance, and I doubt it's as much as 3kW.

It's amazing what people will do to their cars just for a sound. It's like those people driving Tazz's who fit freeflow exhaust systems just to make it sound faster  But it's still a slow ass POS.

Nope

Its not the filter, the standard GUD filter will also get about 2kw if you de trumpet the box...
The holes on the side just make the box have a hollow sound, the cold air is still coming from the grille.

I dont comment on Tazz drivers...

Combined with an induction kit leading straight to the front, maybe. But not just by drilling holes. Hot air rises (Physics 101), and no matter where you drill the holes the air box still sits right on top of the engine bay.

I doubt any of these performance claims without some form of proof/link, and some guy saying so doesn't count :)

Can I just say that I hate the citi because it is so expensive. Not because it is an unsafe piece of excrement.

If it still cost R30 000 like it did 10 years ago, then I would have no problem with it.

Most of the time it's not to make the car sound faster but to make it sound sweeter... :D

i have 2 words for you.

power pipes

when my father still had his 1986 cressida i fitted a powerpipes back box and a tail pipe... the car sounded like a V8...:D

What's always a laugh is that the VW sales guy will tell you that buying the GTS/Surf/whatnoter will increase resale value!

Not mocking VW's, I own one and love it, just think the marketing behind the rabbits has gone wonky.

Fazda - thanks for the correction on the 1800 note. I was thinking of the Sport which had the 1800 motor. My sister drives a '83 Sport. Goes like crazy!

Pleasure :D

Of all the engines available, if you look at the carb versions, the 1600 was actually the sweetest as far as balance went. It wasn't as quick as the 1800, but was definitely "revvier" if there is such a word!

The GTS would get a higher trade in simply due to the fact that it initially sold at a higher price..no other reason..

BTW in 1983, there was no 1800 Sport available, just the 1600 carb GTS and the 1800 FI, GTi...the 1800 Sport was introduced in 1990, when Citis were still being marketed in red, yellow and blue.

Here are the cars: 83 GTS

83 GTi

90 Citi Sport

1800 CTi

Search VW club... all the tests and results are there... its an old thread...
they tested Cone filters vs standard filters vs the de trumpeted air box.
