Cape Town – Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane is being too sensitive about claims that she worked as a spy, the DA said on Thursday.

“We have fulfilled our duty. I think that she is being overly sensitive, and I think that if you look at some of the things that were said and done to her predecessor, I would recommend that she has a teaspoon of cement and hardens up,” the party’s chief whip John Steenhuisen told reporters.

He said her predecessor Thuli Madonsela was called a CIA spy, a government agent “and all sorts of things. It goes with the territory”.

DA leader Mmusi Maimane said she was welcome to consult her lawyers, as she had threatened on Wednesday.

Mkhwebane told Parliament’s justice committee on Wednesday that she wanted the party to withdraw its accusations and that she was consulting her lawyers.

“I would like my integrity to be restored. You say something like this and people have a certain perception about you. If I’m labelled a spy, it’s an issue of my integrity.”

She hoped the matter would be dealt with cordially.

During the interview and selection process to fill the public protector post, the DA said it would not support Mkhwebane.

At the time, the DA claimed it had received information from more than one source that she was on the State Security Agency’s payroll when she spent time in China as an immigration officer from 2010.

Steenhuisen said it was the party’s duty to put such questions to Mkhwebane during the selection process. It would have been completely wrong to not have put the questions and issues to her, and have lingering doubt.

Such interview processes should always be robust, he said.

yeah..

more worried about name calling than actual problems.

seen this before

Well her response says it all, she sounds like a Zuma puppet going full nuclear against the DA.

Not for the first time, I find myself in agreement with the DA. My ancestors must be bitterly disappointed.

Remember things said here about Mogoeng Mogoeng? I believe I also pitched in but can't find it (HAHA - conveniently)

Heaven help South Africa if this idiot becomes Chief Justice...

This man shouldn’t even be a regular judge. Or a lawyer for that matter. He is an ignorant cretin.

E-news reports that the JSC did confirm his nomination. Seems like our Judiciary is not independent any more.

Mogoeng lacks the gravitas, intellectual depth and experience for the job. Clear as daylight from the way he speaks, reacts to criticism and how he conducts himself.

He came across as a simpleton in my opinion, an average guy, the sort of guy who at work achieves 'satisfactory' in merit discussions.

And the lonely voice against the grain - hats off to you sir..
I watched both days (because I had nothing else better to do, LOL) and I'm comfortable with this dude. He seems strict in his interpretation of the law, how the three arms of government relate in legislation and the independence of the Judiciary.

So - this time around, I will wait and see.. :-)

Let us hope but with her first order of business being to destroy the reputation of the previous PP it does not bode well.

You would think lessons should have been learnt by now...

I agree with her stance to consult her lawyers then maybe the DA will bring proof to back up their allegations so that these accusations can be properly investigated and some closure found on this matter.

Still waiting for the Zuptas' proof that Thuli worked for the CIA.

Unfortunately it looks like the DA has a big "I told you so" coming

The problem with appointing the Public Protector is that the Public doesn't have enough say. Asking is to comment on a shortlist of 50 candidates is not enough, we should be allowed to comment on the top 5 :(

Looked like a captured state chose the PP, unless I missed a referendum.

like our supposed democracy where a few self appointed people decide our leaders behind closed their doors..
