it has been a long time since i actually posted anything on this here Forum.
My take on the iPhone ... Well some of you guys may remember my sig as Windows Mobile Junkee .. At my previous place of employment i was tasked with R&D. In the past 5 years i had the pleasure of pushing mobile devices to the breaking point.
I have used and abused just about everything HTC had to offer, (iMate, XDA, Qtek and the t Mobile variants.
Which leads us to the iPhone. i stressed this once before and i will strees this again. If you havent used an iPhone before, you have no idea of what its about. If you havent used an Apple MAC computer you have no idea.
As with any mobile device, you will have pro's and cons, but there are 2 Facts that cannot be overlooked here. The first is that it is an Apple device and these boys make kickass hardware which is backed up with kickass service. the second is, the first generation iPhone is more than a year old and it is still unrivaled and it is still years ahead of the devices still come from any other manufacturer.
on any other mobile phone, the touch screens are a point of concern as the LCD's and touch panels are fragile and can break if dropped.
The iPhone uses a crystallized glass screen which also just happens to be touch sensitive ( Multi touch/ What's the movie with Tom Cruise?)
the list goes on and on .... But at the end of the day, the device runs on MAC OSX which is super stable and super responsive.
As much as i would love to see the iPhone show its face through the networks, i really dont see that happening while the iTunes SA store is empty. Not a good idea, its like a boxer with his arm tied behind his back.
The other thing is the price. What do most people see 199 US. what most people dont see is the contract attached to it.
Apple subsidies and they in turn get a kick back from every call, every sms, email etc. So what happens next? do the Service Providers incur that cost no, the consumer does. As a result, a new contract is cooked up with new call charges to accommodate the kickback to apple. the reason for this is simple, if a Nokia N95 is worth say R 8000.00 i really dont want to know what it costs to make an iPhone.
AnyHo, if we do see the 3G iPhone here in 2008, i think it will be closer to christmas.
