Are there any opensource MMOs? how cool would it be if a community developed, hosted and continualy improved a MMO game?

2nd life is opensource? anyway I was disapointed. Im thinking more rpg fps .oh and compleatly free

There is one , Planeshift , although controlled by a non profit group [similar to Mozilla controlling Firefox] . It is still in "open development", so it is basically in eternal beta...i check it out every once in awhile.

PlaneShift is free for all players - you can download it and play it fully without any fees.
PlaneShift uses two licenses. All source code of the engine is Open Source and under GPL. This means it can be reused in other projects. All the other assets are proprietary and copyrighted to Atomic Blue Non Profit Corporation and no reuse is allowed. If you are interested, please review the license and the reasons behind this choice.

And as an example how they use the community:

We are currently preparing the next release, which will include some exciting new features! And we need your help for one of the exciting additions: NPC voices! The NPCs will greet and converse with you using real voices, and ...[drums roll]... we would like to have your voices to help with the greetings. Make a sample recording of your voice and if the result is good enough, then we will add it in game to one of the current NPCs! If you want to learn how to record your voice to be used in PlaneShift, read
