me and my kid play ultima online, but the graphics etc are dated. I had a look at anarchy online, and it seems better looking....is it similar to the old ultima online..i.e. the way the game works..get a character, build up the strengths and talents, go on quests etc? does it really look better?
Well not really that much the same, but the "get char, build up strengths and go on quests" is basically the defitinion of 90% of all mmorpgs..so yes UO and AO is similar in that regard. BUT UO is 2D last i checked [as in view everything from above like a strategy game] and , AO is 3D like most mmorpgs these days but dated graphics...
UO also have [if i remember correctly] a similar skill setup as Morrowind/Oblivion where you need to repeat something over-and-over-and-over to improve it [i.e. want to improve your mining?..then you need to basically stand and mine all day] . In a way this is realistic, but can get boring. AO got the "kill-kill-kill-complete-quest-kill-kill-kill"-get experience points-level up-allocate your skill points to skills setup like Diablo/Neverwinter etc. This can also make things boring , but at least you can do this in a group [as opposed to improving something like mining/bowyering you can only do alone]...but that's MMORPGs for you [commonly known as "Grind" ].
AO got an interesting Questing System and i enjoyed the Clans [probably same as Horde vs. Alliance in WoW, in AO you can basically not even walk in an opposing Clans cities without getting railed by AI-guards/towers etc] There also that "Alien Invasion" stuff they got going, you got these super big mother ships attacking a "teams/guild" base, fun part is if you're in the same area you actually see this ship passing over you blotting out the sun....all this of course AI generated stuff.
UO = Fantasy Theme
AO = Sci-Fi Theme [or rather a theme like Star Wars, so you get your forests and houses and stuff too] ..on that note there is Star Wars : Galaxies [the mmorpg] too, but i remember them screwing up the game so badly [Sony/SOE] that it's probably dying...
Anyhow, i just remember people writing that AO got a very steep learning curve, primarily because none of the skills or classes are familiar [i.e. we all know what a Warrior or a Thief or a Mage is] , even the races are "alien" . I had to read up quite a few strategy guides to just figure out how to play some of the classes [as in really "how does it work" , not just "what skills do i pick" ] ...especially the ones where you're an "engineer" type and -builds- robots to fight for you..the "Building" is not as easy initially [literally need plans to do it] .
