Hi guys, im usualy not one to ask, ill search for the answer till my fingers go blue, and they turned black a few minutes ago , anyway..

I recieved this old Mnet decoder from my parents, who I asked to have it turned on so that i can watch mnet from my flat, On their side all is well, multichoice has turned it on again and everythings peachy.

But... its one of those old 9000 series ones, it nolonger has a remote or a manual and I just cant get it working, What i remember from back in the day about how to set it up was somthing or other about finding the test signal.

At the back of my decoder theres this little switch that says "Test signal" so ive switched it on, plug the thing in to the tv and im searching for the test signal, those white lines on the black back drop right? but unfortunately im having no luck.

So if anyone can remember the steps or has a manual to one of these things, i would realy apreciate some help, a little guidance or other? I realy want to watch the rugby from home this weekend >.<

Cheers and Thanks

The test signal thingy only works if you're using an aerial cable (co-axial) to connect it to your TV.

You should also be able to connect using RCA cables. That will mean zero tuning, just flip the TV to AV-1 or AV-2.

Yea, i have it connected to the tv with a co-axial in the port that says "TV", and the other port that says "Arial" is connected to my arial

Mnet doesn’t use the normal frequencies aerial for their terrestrial broadcast so make sure that the aerial on top is one of those mnety ones?

Are you searching in the UHF range? If you use the RCA cables you won't have to go searching for a signal.

Pretty sure its mnetty enough...altho im not exactly sure what that means.. Anyone know of a step by step guide to mnet installation, or somewhere i can download a manual?

It means that the antenna needs to be UHF - vertically polarised I think.

I Dont have a RCA cable, so its not realy an option at the moment... ): ill see about getting one tho, my tv can be set between an option that says "V/UHF" and another that says "Cable" ive got it on "V/UHF" so i assume its searching on both Vand UHF

Im having no luck, went to Hifi corp trying to find an RCA cable which would fit the decoder but its the 9000 series ones, those old bloody things, the outlet for it is ancient, looks like you can plug in one of those old keyboards in there, an i cant find a RCA cable which looks anything like that on the other end.

I went an bought a new co-axial cable, one that male-female, had one which was male-male and used one of those thingys to change the gender at one end, but still no luck.

So no one outh there has a digital manual for a 9000 series decoder? maybe the decoder is just buggerd :P

Its a Samsung Flatron

You have possibly 2 problems:

1) If the location you are using the decoder at has changed, then it is likely that the frequency MNET is broadcast on is also different (maybe a different transmitter). So you will need to tune the decoder to MNET first.

However, you need to determine first if you can receive MNET at all. You should be able to tune the tv to the scrambled MNET signal without the decoder being in the loop at all. Some tv's may "mute" the display of the scrambled MNET so you may already get stuck here. Older tv's won't do this "muting" thing. Chances are if you are receiving all of SABC 1,2,3 and E-tv ok then MNET would also be ok.

If, of course, the decoder is already showing a 7 and a green light then MNET is already tuned and descrambled on your decoder.

2) You must tune the tv to the decoder's output signal on the RF cable (seeing AV doesn't work for you). Switching the test signal on is a must. If your folks didn't mess with the output frequency of the decoder it should be at the bottom of the UHF band.

Im not getting a test signal.. its switched on.. and plugged in.. but the black backdrop with the 2 white lines never shows up no matter how or how many times I run a search for it.. There's a nob at the back you can turn using a small screwdriver.. and another which is slightly more concealed.. what do they do? at this point ive tried everthing altho im not sure what those 2 knobs are for.. im that the une is used for setting the decoder to mnet once the test signal has been found?

Take your decoder to the Multichoice customer care centre. They should be able to test and tune it for you. Otherwise try a Multichoice accredited installer.

Multichoice is testing their digital terrestrial signal with the help of some Mnet decoder owners (they swop the old for the new)... Now if you could get one of those :D

If it's available where you stay... of course.

If there is no test signal shown I would sort out this problem before tackling any other problem like aerial signal quality or antenna problems. Whether you have a good signal or even disconnect the antenna input to the decoder you should still be able to see the test signal. Test signal is generated by the decoder to help you tune the TV to the decoder.Test signals are RF signals in the case of MNET selected in the UHF band. The other option is using RCA which is audio / video signals that does not require any setting using the test signal by selecting the approriate AV input on your TV. Picture quality wise this is the better option. From your statement above you do not get a test bar.Note the small screw to adjust the rf frequency is meant to only move the output MNET frequency away from a interfering frequency very close to the mnet frequency.
By constantly turning the screw which is fairly delicate you may have damaged the screw ( potentiometer)
My suggestion would be using the AV option however you state there are no RCA outputs at the back of the decode but as you state " its the 9000 series ones, those old bloody things, the outlet for it is ancient, looks like you can plug in one of those old keyboards in there". This connector is most likely a scart connector. Try buying a scart to 3 RCA cable. Must be Scart in to RCA out cable or same cable with in /out switch. With this you would not require tuning you TV ( test signal) . Connect the scart to your decoder the rca connectors are yellow for video and the other ( red/ black) for audio left and right channels which should be connected to the AV input of your TV and then selecting the appropriate AV1 or AV2.

Thanks for the detailed reply Satron, its much apreciated

Ive looked for a "scart to 3 RCA cable" but havent found anyone who still keeps those in stock, So in a final move of despiration Ive decided to take the decoder to someone with multichoice accreditation, I just want it fixed or if i can buy a new one.. whatever it takes.. -- Im watching the Super14 from home this weeekend ;) --

Does anyone know of a good place with competent people for these kinds of repairs in the Capetown area? (Northern Suburbs preferd)

Should probly call multichoice and hear what they have to say :)

do you have to pay extra to have MNET decoder switched on in addition to DSTV mnet?

do you have to pay extra to have MNET decoder switched on in addition to DSTV mnet?

yes, but you can choose that they remove it from your DSTV bouquet and thus keep paying for DSTV only while having MNET on the analogue decoder
