MNP Woes..

Anyhow... he got out the VM SIM, set up the internet and all. But the internet did not want to connect.

You know you have to make a chargeable call before you can connect GPRS, right?

Hip, hip hooray!
Hallelujah chorus! Strike up the band! :D

After recieving two phone calls from Virgin Mobile today, my simcard went live again this afternoon! :)

Finally I am back in communication... :)

Now I just sincerely hope that it remains this way...
Even the slightest provocation will cause me to port away from VM again at the first chance... - but I will trial them for a month or two to decide...

I had first hand experience in this as I’ve been with VM some time already.
Anyhow...
Sunday morning my brother was greeted with R50 airtime. But still no GPRS.
This morning everything started working! It must’ve been a slo-mo port.
Porting successful.

Seems like VM has finally sorted out their MNP problems. I'd be interested to hear how people porting at the moment are coping, but I guess those that don't have any problems won't post here.

Its free as long as you're not contractually tied to Vodacom, although VM'll charge you for the sim.

Some feedback:

I think porting is starting to settle down and become more stable. My mother ported from Vodacom prepaid to Virgin on Sunday, Wednesday evening, the port completed.

They quoted 6 days. (suppose they're quoting long to be sure)

I'll be moving my R1000+ monthly bill to the (other) Red boys as soon as my contract expires.

There has been a lot of negativity raised about porting from some guys having had bad experiences, remember one incompetent staff member can make the place look bad, when in effect it's only the one fool

Let's get voting with our feet.

make sure what your contract terms are; my service provider wants to charge me R945 for not notifying before I port (3 months!!!) although my 24 month contract expired in August.

That's fairly standard for most cellular contracts. Even if your 24 month contract period is up, they still require 3 months notice before you can cancel. Suppose that's why they always advise that one reads the fine print before signing on the bottom line..........

Ta, I'll remember that, wonder if I can notify of cancellation 3 months prior to the end of the contract

As far as I know, you can notify them 3 months before your contract expires that you intend to cancel at the end of the contract term. Otherwise, the other option is to convert your contract number to a prepaid which can be done immediately (just did one for my dad on Vodacom about 3 weeks back). Once on prepaid, you can then cancel or port or whatever you want....
