I had a new contact with Virgin Mobile, I also had a contract with MTN that had been through its initial contact period and had moved on to being a month to month notice period 'contract' requested if I could port my MTN number over to my Virgin Mobile contract (ie replace my Virgin Mobile No. with my MTN no.) I had no problem doing this.

I now have a Vodacom contract and would like to port my number from Virgin Mobile (I am now in the month to month notice period again WITH MY vIRGIN mOBILE 'contract') to my Vodacom contract. I have been told by Vodacom that this is not possible.

My question is, does Vodacom have a different MNP policy to Virgin Mobile? It seems this is the case.

I had to read your explanation above 4x to understand what you were saying. I didn't think this was possible, based on previous experience.

Basically you have an existing contract with Vodacom, but don't like/want the number that Vodacom gave you. So you want to replace it with your current Virgin Mobile number (which is actually your old MTN number), but still continue with the Vodacom contract. You own both the numbers, and don't understand why Vodacom won't allow it.

Based on what you told us, then it would seem that Vodacom does have a different MNP policy. Who at Vodacom did you speak to? Was it the call-center, or did you go to a Vodashop? I'd keep asking a few more people, try a different Vodashop/Service Provider, just to be sure, as most people won't even understand what you are trying to do, and they'll probably just tell you NO.

Let us know if you come right though...

Slightly off-topic:
I do know that if MTN ever tried to do something like this, there systems would make a royal mess-up of it. You'd be stuck on all 3 networks, be unable to use your number for a month, and probably get billed from all three networks. It's like sending a Grade 9 student straight to 3rd year varsity.

You are spot on.

I had an iTalk MTN contract. I also had a Virgin Mobile contract. I was due for an upgrade with regards my MTN contract and decided that I was going to cancel the contract and establish a NEW contract with Virgin Mobile, I was informed that I could port my number from my iTalk MTN contract to my existing Virgin Mobile contract thereby keeping my MTN number and forfeiting my Virgin Mobile contract number, however still fulfilling the terms of my Virgin Mobile contract.

My Virgin Mobile contract committment ended with my last payment on the 15th of January 2010. I have an existing Vodacom Mobile Number that I use for loading data bundles as and when I require data. I purchased this Vodacom Prepaid SIM card a few months ago, I went through the RICA process a month or two later and therefore had a prepaid Vodacom SIM that I hoped could be used. I would have preferred that Vodacom accept my MTN number that I had been using all these years and just update the MNP details to the RICA Vodacom SIM card I had in my possession.

Instead Vodacom require that I purchase another SIM starter pack and go through the RICA process and then they will port my MTN number to that new Vodacom SIM. Its all good, I appreciate that there is a system that needs to be followed.
