I'm guessing the bit that they're leaving out, which is where they would be departing from reality, is to achieve this kind of speed on a FDD system, they need 20MHz on the downlink alone.
So it's 20 for down, 20 for up, multiplied by 3 sectors per basestation ... that a minimum of 120MHz per provider, and there's usually more than one.
They're assuming all other forms of radio communication must just be set aside so that LTE can get the spectrum it requires ... not very realistic (esp. in this country).

Right now I'd be ecstatic to just have 1mbps (or even 512kbps) wireless with low latency at my home

1 km from the base station as well. Hmm. So you will need thousands of base stations just to cover Joburg if you want speeds like they are advertising...
