Mobile broadband prices falling

what is driving mobile broadband costs in SA:

The wireless section or the landline section of the service?

My guess: Telkom is driving the high mobile broadband costs with their absurd line charges.

German owned T-Mobile has announced that it will be offering an unlimited data offering (read 2 GB) at 8.50 pounds in the UK, making it affordable enough to ditch traditional wired services.

What does the "(read 2 GB)" part mean?

Agreed.

If we can cut out hellskommels, then the prices should come down. Why are the mobile operators so hesitant to take on Telkom? Is it because Telcom can undercut their prices whilst still making a good profit? Seems to be the case...

Maybe we should do sic Chuck Norris on the DoC? :D

Telkom should beware and take note - they should and must cut their prices lest their actions will cause the people to rise up against them in a violent manner.

@rpm - do you have a link for the t-mobile offer? :) Had a look at their site and nothing has jumped out at me yet.

Locally we have not seen similar price wars yet, and it is not clear why mobile operators are hesitant to compete on price. This is especially true for providers like Sentech and iBurst where most of their revenue relies on data and growing their current user base.

Why doesn't Iburst and Sentech compete with fixed line ADSL???

Iburst G3: 1024kbps 3Gb + 64kbps after cap... R599pm
Telkom ADSL1024: 1024kbps 3Gb....... R1021pm (680+249+92).

Sentech's Premium 512kbps 40GB soft cap... R1449pm
Telkom ADSL512: 40GB ??? non-existent with the death of AYCE

The real question is why doesn't Telkom compete with the mobile operators?

Then, and only then, will we see the price war begin.

"Compete...!" Ha ha ha, what's that? With who? "We are TelScum, we don't f^*#%g compete!"

Because at the top of the pyramid you have DoC (Gov.) the forebearer and part owner in all the major communications companies in South Africa. That's why Cellc can hang off Vodacom, Telkom (P)ussyfoots Vodacom. And then there is Sentech, SABC, gov, DoC. Telkom won't compete, it isn't necessary cause they get a piece of everyones pie anyway.
