Mobile data prices

Vodacom’s data prices start at R9.25 for 5MB – translating into R1.85 per MB. This is far more expensive than Virgin Mobile’s flat rate of 50c per MB and Cell C’s special offer of R1 per MB for new contract customers

Well again its the smoke and mirror show, but at least I have the solace of knowing that even though I'm getting ripped off more by Vodacom, I'm at least getting data I paid for, something I can't vouch for on either Virgin or Cell C:rolleyes:

I am hoping Telkom will push them to lower it, but that's likes wishing for robbers to offer you better security options against future break ins. ;)

When will Telkom actually launch now?

the idea is good, but prices need to drop way more

Cell - C is cutting their own throats !

Cell - c amazes me with their data prices. Because Virgin uses their network and offers a lower tariff. Hopefully Telkom will keep their out of bundle and normal data prices lower than 50c. This will open a new price war market. Telkom also needs to boost coverage.

I'm so tired waiting for Neotel. Might even give Telkom CDMA a try. What the heal am I saying?

Was thinking the same thing! I don't care anymore, a long shot yes... if Telkom does somehow offer better value, I'll sign up with them! It just seems like there's no exception to the rule, every operator is set to offer as little as possible, for as much as possible whilst riding the Telkom scapegoat.

+1

And there are some definite price decreases coming our way from Vodacom's side... can't wait!

Way I see it, Cell C and Virgin are useless, i mean who wants gprs only nowadays. if they pulled their fingers out of their "brains" for a while they might realise that.

MTN, no thanks, not with these new contracts of theirs. Im due for an upgrade, but im told I have no choice but to switch to this new rubbish they have where I end up paying R150 a month more for the exact same as what I have now.

That leaves voda. Now im no fan of voda but their data is reasonable at least and their calls aint that much different to MTN so maybe give them a try. Also their 3g cant possibly be as bad as MTN's has been lately.

I agree.
Oh and Vodacom has beter 3G coverage than MTN. So rather go with them.

Does anyone think it suspicious that the 2 gig data bundle for MTN and Vodacom are exactly the same price?

Vodacom has also starting punting its prepaid data bundles using the payoff line “More Data. More Freedom. For Much Less.” There is however no real reduction is price, and the term "For Much Less" is most likely referring to potential savings when using a bundle which is more suitable to your needs.

Priceless. I think this summarises the mobile industry in South Africa...

Neotel’s contract conditions, where customers can cancel their 24 month contract at any time and then only have to pay in the outstanding amount on the CDMA device, is also a first in the industry.
Erm ... what on earth am I supposed to do with a CDMA device? Use it as a doorstop? Why don't they buy it back from me?
[edit : and it's not like I could go and buy my own CDMA device from a different vendor because nobody else is allowed to import them, so, the price of this device is probably 5 * it's actual value. Pfffft! ]
The biggest threat to the mobile providers may, however, be Telkom which is set to launch its HSDPA services soon. Telkom is expected to offer far better value for money than the cellular providers, putting additional pressure on current mobile data bundle pricing.
This is me begging for teklom to hurry up with this offering. And ... this is a verry rare occasion, where I am edging teklom on! Go Go Go! Use your governmint protected situation to introduce real competition! Take a chunk out of Voda's profit margins. GOOOOOOO TEKLOM GOOOOOOO!
