Mobile navigation app comparison

Anyone using TomTom on Apple CarPlay?
Looks like it’s R372 a year for a subscription.

Slightly off topic, but I use TomTom Premium in car with built in SatNav in UK, it came with vehicle and is free for me until 2027.

Overall very good, I have found traffic works better than Google/Apple/Waze. I read somewhere that TomTom has visibility into UK road agencies to get road/traffic issue as well as the normal crowd sourced traffic info. Also the various cameras like speed, traffic light, average speed all show correctly and then integrate with the car alerting me to them. This along with speed sign recognitions is cool.

What isn't good are the maps colours, compared to mobile apps they are very bland and grey. Maybe its a "safety" thing? Also, searching for a destination is an absolute ball ache mainly as Addresses and Points of Interest are separated, and the search algorithm seems more like a direct hit search, sucks balls!

Just a little something for those in this thread who disregard Apple Maps and choose Google Maps as the default winner without any of that objectivity they love to punt around every corner.

Don’t just look at the 3D models that are far superior. Notice the satellite imaging which is crystal clear along with the map detail.

Best of all note then points of interest on the Apple Maps front…and this is a comparison with strictly default settings.

Apple loses (in SA at least) on the Street View front though.

So tell me again how Apple Maps sucks and why nobody should be using it. After looking at the above the question should rather be why is anyone using Google Maps.

Waze FTW. It is much better at routing around any traffic build up. Yes, maps keep you on the main roads more but Waze gets you there quicker.

In all honesty, having been on the Android & Apple side & forums ... and there is no comparision when it comes to which 'side' is more objective.

Here's a review I saw the other day :

Edit: It'll probably look much better on your Huawei though.
Actually just looked - it's the same ;)

It's strange because Google Maps on the PC has great 3D models - but they don't carry over.

Google Earth on all platforms has great models too. I'm not sure why they haven't implemented implemented in mobile

Another gripe with Apple Maps, it pulls random Destinations when I am in CarPlay mode :| When I do the trip planning before getting in the car, my usual locations are there.

Will try get a screenshot when I leave shortly.

Is that from a Mac?

Mine looks very different to yours

iPad app.

That does look much better but I reckon still not quite on par with Apple Maps.

But more surprising to me is how little POI’s are in the Google Maps screenshot when Apple Maps is so often accused of not having enough data.

That's the PC though - on the mobile app, my Google Maps looks as bad as yours. I'm not sure why they haven't implemented high resolution 3D models, as they clearly exist ...

But using an Apple argument ;) when the phones 6" screen is sitting an arm lengths away & the zoom level is further away as you're driving - will you realistically notice that it's low resolution?
And do most people navigate in map or terrain option?

Not quite understanding what you mean? Like your frequently visited stuff isn’t there and you get some other suggestions?

Nah I agree with you while navigating I also prefer the low detail mode and by default I don’t use the satellite image when navigating so that goes away anyway.

3D models can be very useful when navigating especially in new areas in city cetres where it can be very hard to tell things apart otherwise.

I just happened to check on my wife last night and the hotel she’s staying at and then noticed the 3D models and remembered this thread and compared them quickly and was quite surprised by the stark differences.

It does seem like Google Maps uses the 3D models when you don’t specifically put it in 3D mode but use a two finger swipe to change your angle but it’s still a bit odd.

Not that I use my phone to navigate since I have Carplay for that, but your screenshot looks far too busy for me and actually makes it very hard to navigate compared to the simplicity of Apple Maps.

Basically this. Didn’t happen before

I’ll have to specifically check next time.

I’m always astounded by Siri knowing my exact patterns and automatically suggesting where I was going without me doing ****.

Ja I prefer Google Maps to Apple, from my experience just works better to navigate.
The times I used Apple, if I knew the general area and so ignored a turn off suggested, the time to destination would go down by a minute or two.
Also we've got a place out in the bush and often invite friends and family, we've got a standing message we send which is to say if they're using Apple Maps to ignore the first turn off it suggests as this takes you on a parallel dirt road, rather take offramp xyz.

Also for my eyes at least, following Google seems easier; so if there's two offramps/ roads close to each other I find it easier to know which one to take using Google compared to Apple.
Waze I liked, I just found it, I dunno, intrusive/ busy are the words I guess? But in terms of letting you know what's coming it was cool.

It seems that Apple CarPlay can’t do satellite images using Apple Maps … only Google Maps offers it

Unless there is something I have missed?
