I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this, but I've been battling with this all day now, and really need some advice here.

I called Nashua Mobile this morning to find out when my 4 cellphone contracts will be expiring. I got all of this information, and then asked how I should go about cancelling my Cell-c contract (which ends pretty soon), and porting that number to my existing MTN contract. Now to give you some background, my mtn simcard just lies in a drawer and I use the free minutes every month, but MTN's service is way better, and they have 3g and hsdpa and all those lovely things that Cellc don't offer.

I was told by Tsepo the nashua mobile consultant that this is not possible, but when I asked why not, he just gave me some random rubbish. I then asked to speak to his manager. His manager (Collin Swartz) then told me (amongst other things) that Icasa forbids porting a number to an existing contract, and that they only allow porting to a new contract.

The way I see it, is Nashua Mobile is trying to force me to take out a new contract, so they can make some more money out of me. I'm sure if the situation was put to MTN they would be quite happy to port the number, as I spend ~R600 per month on my Cellc number, as apposed to the ~R200 that I pay for the MTN contract every month. For them it would mean ~R400 extra per month, which isn't much on it's own, but every little bit extra counts I'm sure.

Now what I want to find out is, does anyone know if Icasa specifically forbids the above at all, and has anyone else been able to achieve something similar?

Thanks

This kinda makes sense to me.... How would you port to an existing contract? Or maybe I am misunderstanding you. Please clarify.

@ Spellcheck

Nope, other than the fact that it doesn't specifically mention that I can't port a number to an existing contract.

P.S. I have also read Vodacom, CellC, and Nashua Mobile's MNP pages, and none of them helped 1 bit.

I want them to port my CellC number to my existing MTN contract.
They are quite willing to change my MTN number to another number, as long as it isn't a ported number. So this tells me that what I'm requesting is not impossible, they just don't want to help me in this regard.

I also dont think you can port a number to an existing contract - it kinda doesnt make sense. You have to port to a new contract or I dont even think it has to be a contract, but it must be to a new account, you can't have an existing number and ask them to move the other networks number to that number??? But never mind that for now.

Typically if you want to port, the porting is done by the network to which you are moving.

I.e if you are now on cell c (through nashual mobile) and want to port to mtn, you need to speak to mtn to do the port, not cell c/nashua mobile, this is the first thing you are doing wrong.

Second thing, and this i my opinion, if you are considereing porting to mtn with nashua mobile as your service provider thats a mistake too. Rather go direct with MTNSP. Having nashua mobile as your service provider bring with it its own issues, try avoid it.

Hi
I highly doubt this can be done by any Network, or allowed at the moment. I will have to check and confirm.
Basically you want to port your Cell C number into MTN but keep it on an existing contract that you have with MTN and cancel the MTN number you originally had on the contract?
This is known as a number swap. I dont think it can be done on a ported in number. As I mentioned I will have to confirm.

Trust me I know, but the current MTN contract is already with Nashua Mobile, so I don't have much choice in the matter. Although nashua+MTN > nashua+cellc

But no one can tell me why not, that's what's really getting to me. They keep giving me bullsh** answers, and I'm sick of it.

If you can find anything out, it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi. I work for Vodacom company and might be able to shed a bit of light on this. Going to answer pretending you are a existing Vodacom client and want to port your Cell C number over to us. If you are a existing client, the Cell C number can be ported to Vodacom into your existing Vodacom ACCOUNT. Each line is seen as a contract on its own and therefore one number can not be ported into another number. With Vodacom we have month to month contracts, so you dont have to be bound by a 24 month contract. No phone would be issued to you on a month 2 month contract though. So to end off, I would say from a common sense point of view, Nashuah should be able to port your Cell C number over to MTN using your existing nashua MTN ACCOUNT, so then instead of having one number on your MTN account, you would then have two reflecting on your MTN (Nashua MTN) account.

But would that not mean that I would then be paying for 2 contracts? Wouldn't it be easier to just drop the current number, and add the ported number?
Or am I misunderstanding something?

Hi
I dont think this is what he was asking initially. As I mentioned he wanted to conduct a number swap on a ported number. Its possible on a number thats on-net but I dont think it applies to numbers that port in.

Yes, each line will have its own subscription cost that will need to be paid. With Vodacom, if you have 3 lines on one account, each of them on the Weekender package, you will pay R135.00 per month x 3. One account, 3 lines (contracts) on that account.

Hi
I will check and see if its possible to do a number swap on a ported in number. Will let you know.

I have just done a quick test on the Vodacom system that I use with a MTN number I ported last month, and it allows me to do a number swop. Obviously I did not finalize it....cant just go and change my clients number, but from Vodacom SP point of view, I dont see why a number swop on a offnet ported number can not be done.

Thank you for doing that. I appreciate the fact that you went out and checked if it's possible, instead of just saying it isn't, without even checking.
