Mobile operators to boost 'chat' services

But why don't they just use the existing mxit interface and enhance it? Isn't this the goal of mxit or am I misunderstanding something?

I think they are actually writing their own chat client and that is why they do not want to use mxit or another company. Because they want control over their users and product.

Hopefully it will be based on a open platform. Because otherwise I won't see it fit to compete with Mxit(Mxit also needs to open its platform, but at the moment its the market leader in RSA. Because their protocol is based on Jabber, but they locked all Jabber Servers out except GTalk).

I alwys thought it would pretty cool to show availability of a contact in your contact list ...

Push to talk has that functionality, which is cool... oh wait, only corporate users may apply for PTT in SA.

Been using mig33 and MSN on my phone for a few years, can't see the use of yet another chat client...

There is already an open framework specifically intended for instant messaging between cellular operators-Nokia and SE handsets even include native clients to use it. Operators just have to implement the servers and run the damned gateways.

Nimbuzz is the ultimate app for me.
You can Buzz a user when online and wanting to chat. This gives your friend a missed call with the +313131 number so you can log in if you want to see who is buzzing around :)
You can also add your Skype, Windows Live Messenger (MSN), Yahoo Messenger, ICQ, AIM, studiVZ, GoogleTalk, Facebook, MySpace, Jabber and many more...
It also has a quircky helpbot but doesn`t help much.
Its a great Cell phone and PC app!

The only thing nimbuzz does not have is the Mxit local services
(Tradepost etc.)

ps. However with our cell phone networks handshaking from GPRS to 3G being such an issue, staying connected long enough to have a good chat remains and issue...

Mxit was first to do this. Now the rest of the world are wanting to do it. South Africa in the lead :)

One thing Mxit defnitely needs to open up their protocol a bit more.

And PTT don't let me even go there. Why are we being raped and not allowed to use PTT cost effectively here.
