Why Vodacom and MTN want Netflix and YouTube to pay them

South Africa's mobile network operators believe that companies like Netflix, Amazon (Prime Video), Disney, Google (YouTube), and Facebook should contribute towards building their infrastructure.

This is according to a paper that was recently released by the Association of Communications and Technology (ACT), an industry body whose members include Cell C, Liquid, MTN, Rain, Telkom, and Vodacom.

This is funny. Should it be funny to me, or does this make complete sense?

I assume this is how it works in other countries as well?

so in return will ACT share their profits with Netflix, Amazon (Prime Video), Disney, Google (YouTube), and Facebook etc?

It's called double-dipping.

Cell C, Liquid, MTN, Rain, Telkom, and Vodacom want both consumers and OTT companies to double pay for the same infrastructure.

The Association of Communications and Technology (ACT) [Cell C, Liquid, MTN, Rain, Telkom, and Vodacom] fails to mention end consumers & businesses in the partner content article.

Consumers are paying Cell C, Liquid, MTN, Rain, Telkom, and Vodacom for the line.
If you can't make a profit, raise prices to consumers or reduce your costs.

This is like the municipalities wanting households and Eskom to pay them for selling electricity.

So must the motor manufactures pay for the roads as well.

You charge exorbitant rates for data .

Another half baked scheme with no Merit at all.
The fcking nerve of these guys. Unbelievable.

So, hold on, network providers develop their networks based on the demand of their customers (the eventual device users) and fund said development from the revenue they earn from selling data to said users.

So now we have to believe they have not already been compensated for their infrastructure development through the price we pay them for the data we use? All Netflix and other entities that drive internet usage have done is making these greedy buggers even more money because we are paying (them) for more data usage (based on data prices which include infrastructure development)!?

Really, have the same "logic" prevalent in Government now spread to Vodacom / MTN?

This is stupid and just plain wishful thinking. These companies don't know how to make profit and now thry want to become parasites

Of course - they want their bread buttered both sides, and strawberries and cream for a finisher

Weren't they they ones pushing for an internet tax years ago?

No idea - but the Government just might like the idea, and instead of Netflix etc. paying The Cellphone Cartel, money, they pay it to Government.

But I don't understand why they don't just upfront ask Netflix, Disney + etc. Instead of bull crap articles like this one.
