Mobile services to replace fixed line in rural areas: source

Telkom’s mobile services are already used in many areas as a fixed-line replacement technology, and it would therefore not be challenging for the company to extend this strategy to a wider rural area.

I know this.

Last year, after a cable theft incident in our neighbourhood, we had troubles for 2 months in getting our line back up. Telkom eventually contacted us, saying that we will need to implement a new wireless mobile phone as they will no longer provide a fixed line service due to cable theft in the area.

Unfortunately, they are no longer able to provide data services in the area. We were informed that 8TA has no reception, that people in our neighbourhood will no longer qualify for access to ADSL and that we need to consider services like MTN and Vodacom for Internet access.

And this is where they should change their strategy! Get a 3G base station (or 3) in there asap...

Totally agreed, well, at least VC and MTN is getting some free promotion - I couldn't believe it when the operator told me this....
