Hi ,

Been looking at this solution from the good ol boys at INTEL.

INTEL WiFi / WiMAX 5350

Please could one of the companies busy with WiMAX tell me whether this is a viable solution for MOBILE WiMAX -- IN -- *SA*

IS this card available in SA ? ( have not seen it advertised in any of the Laptops availabe in SA )

Has it been passed by ICASA ?

Anything else similar available ?

WHY MOBILE WiMAX ? -- another option with perhaps better pricing

With this INTEL card and a 3G card ( GSM - network ) in my laptop , I am pretty much covered for everything.

So WiMAX Gurus and installers -- what say you ????

Interesting, but not really much use. Telkom and Neotel WiMAX is at 3.5 GHz, so no go. iBurst/Vodacom WiMAX is at 2.5 GHz, but they don't have enough spectrum, and it's way overpriced. No-one else is allowed to deploy WiMAX at 2.5 GHz legally until ICASA feels like it (and they meet the BEE requirements).

All of the current networks in SA only allow the terminals they supply. This isn't unique to South Africa - in practice, there are still compatibility issues between different WiMAX vendors' equipment. Only XOhm (Sprint-Nextel / Clearwire) in the US has really overcome these by forcing interoperability testing on all its vendors. My guess is that this card works perfectly on XOhm (which is the right version of the standard in the right band).

FWIW Vodacom does not allow Mobile Wimax as yet.

The Dell E4300 has a Mobile Wimax receiver that is not currently supported , as the network grows and gets more revenue then maybe , but not now also as spectrum is limited with regards to ICASA.

Screamer is using 2.5G as well.

Screamer is using Sentech's 2.5 GHz spectrum, and there is severe doubt as to the legality and sustainability of this. It's likely that ICASA will shut them down in favour of a licensee that meets the criteria gazetted for this spectrum (51% BEE etc).

Interesting times ahead ...

Thanks ,

INTEL 5100 is NOT WiMAX --far as I know

STILL looking for INTEL 5350. This card has Wifi as well so not really wasted. Just enable WiMAX when it becomes available.

So WHERE can I get one ( and NOT an engineering sample from an eBay shop in Hong Kong :D )

Still the way DELL SA perform and the prices they charge one might as well take a "holiday" to Hong Kong.

ALL good and well --

All I am worried about is my "vapourware" INTEL 5350

If 2.5 is the accepted World Standard will SA WiMAX then settle on that part of the spectrum ? Notwithstanding BEE / SENTECH / INFRACO etc etc

I can only assume that your posting, that was pure supposition, speculation and an uninformed opinion, was designed to get us to comment on our spectrum agreements and that is proprietary info so we won't be drawn into it.

It would be interesting to hear who but you has severe doubt as to the legality of our agreements and who else but you think there is a likelihood of ICASA "shutting us down.

After reading your posts I suppose I should have asked

".....who but you and Neotel......";)

You guys do know that Mobile Wimax is a completely different standard than Fixed Wimax?
There's more to Mobile Wimax than just the radio side of things.

There's also the legal issues of whether a mobile wimax provider is actually allowed to provider a truly mobile service (think, cellphone operator).

HHHhhmm Maybe just WiMAX hotspots / zones ?????

semi-roaming , semi-mobile

* Cellphone Operator * -- if 3G was everywhere perhaps you would never need to worry about WiMAX "everywhere" Although I think that WiMAX provides a better experience.

VOICE / DATA the big differentiator | VOIP -- the "wild card"
