Mobo for media purposes!

The TV out is either Svideo or Component (blue green red type cable). it's all on the riser card with the HDMI and the SPDIF audio connectors.

If you can at all, use either the HDMI or DVI connectors on your plasma. The image quality will blow your mind compared to the old "legacy" connectors.

Svideo won't be bad, but with DVI or HDMI, you can read text clearly in windows on it.
 
O whoops, forgot about the PVR question:

Generally you need a tuner compatible with windows media centre for Vista, but only if you want to record TV. You don't need to to play anything, only record. Vista does not support analog tuners, so it will only work with DSTV or a decoder. you cant switch channels with it, unless you are in a area that already broadcasts in Digital. (DVB-T I think it's called)

You can pick up compatible ones for about R400 or so.

Let me just start off with saying I am not trying to start a flame war here, this is just one of my pet peeves if you want.

The difference between HDMI, DVI or component cables are minimal. The main difference is how the components you are using implements the different inputs/outputs. So far in this "connector" war there still isn't a clear winner. All these formats can and do support 1080p, taking into consideration that your equipment also have to support 1080p on these outputs.

Also note that s-video is limited to 480i meaning that DVI, HDMI and Component will out perform s-video on an HDTV set.

Fair enough, but most new displays out there the component is available on all models (I do believe clarity on them is lower).

one of DVI or HDMI is usually available and preferable. This board supports both. Thats why I like it. no matter what display you have, chances are the board will have the connector/interface to get the most out of it.

your right sir, My bum leaves out words, I should have said Vista Media Centre. The included software with the Tuners work quite well, just not in Windows Media Centre

you sir, are referring to software tuners. those junky bt878 (and other silly chip) based devices.
vista media center, and mce2005, and every version of microsoft's lovely media center program has always had a requirement for a hardware mpeg2 encoding capturing card, if using analog sources. like hte povr150/250/500 range from hauppauge, or the ehome wonder, ehome wonder elite, theater 550 pro from ati...they are all analog tuners, to tune analog frequencies, for which vista/mce is designed.

and what is this channel changing you are trying to describe? it is so wrong i cant even figure out where your logic is faulty.? you can switch channels with it always...heck, either you
1) use dvb-t, in whcih case you press ch+ and it changes up a channel
2) you use plain old analogue, in which case you press ch+ and it changes a channel
3) you plumb your dstv/mnet through the analogue tuner, in which case you press ch+ and it sends a signal to the irblaster which sputs out the correct codes so that you decoder changes channel.

what part are you referring to?

The last part. Never thought to use the ir blaster. will give it a go.
 
ok.. does any1 know when DVB-T is going to go live in durban????

With regards to working off a DSTV??? whats this about, as i dont have DSTV, and dont intend on getting...
 
Just got the PVR-150 with an IR Blaster, but cannot get it to work with my DSTV decoder, anyone any ideas ?

Still got the old decoder, one with scart etc.
After Googling around, seems that the blaster that comes with the hauppauge card is unable to change channels on DSTV, apparently the MCE remote comes with remote blasters that work with dstv decoders ...?
 
yes, correct.

if you dont have the mce remote receiver (usb) and the irblaster plugged into the rear of that (jack labelled "1") , then you cant select svideo or composite inputs, to set up a satellite or cable box in the setup screen.
 
Thanks, I'm probably only 80% finished with my HTPC. (after 1 year of investigation) and stuffing around. Ordered an MCE remote today, quite cheap now. Wish only now DSTV can give us an EPG !!
