A friend of a friend asked if I can try and shoot some modeling portfolio photos for her. *eeeek* What kind of equipment do I definitely need to be able to do this. I have no backdrops and lights etc. So where else would one take them?

Any advice very welcome!

For popular modelling photos no special equipment is needed. Assuming your friend is attractive all she is required to do is whip her kit of, open up and you snap away! Instant internet success! The bedroom is a suitable venue but for more effect a public place can work wonders! :)

Have a look here.

Also look at the artificial light gallery but, as you say, you don't have the equipment for that.

Jhbgirl, it depends where you're shooting, really. If you're outside, use the light available to you. Reflectors is a good and relatively affordable way to manipulate light, so you can put someone in the shadow and still get enough light on them. If you want to go really cheap you can buy those silver or light grey car windscreen shades - you know the type that's made of a soft cloth with the soft wire frame that can twist into a small package - like these - or even white styrofoam.
