Modem Firmware

Anyone, see this from my post from "Tower 12 (Mintek)" - sorry guys at support - seems I may have caused the problem myself.

"OK...some light on the subjct - and very interesting. Right in the beginning when I installed the USB software, I modified the Registry and config file to only show the 2.5 GHZ frequency. Once I changed this back, voila, the bloody interference from Tower 82 was back where previously I could basically move around without much interference from any other tower. THAT WAS AFTER THE UPGRADE OF THE FIRMWARE to 4.2.1.8 - so the firmware seems to definitely read from the registry - not totally ignoring the other freqs but searching longer for the ones that are listed in the registry.

That is my gut feeling - ProAsm and Rodent, any comments?"

I can show you an ADSL connection that hits a constant 400kilobits. And a 64k ISDN that hits a constant 57 kilobits. All on SAIX. Scary, but true.

I will agree with you there on ADSL & ISDN....
but as for "is still SUB 56K modem speeds "
I have NEVER experienced anything near this with any
standard modem dial-up to any ISP here in SA.

Yeah as Telkom products go, ISDN is pretty damn good. I personally have not used dialup in about 5 years. I will not use it either. We have crawled but have come a long way from the 9600 modems of the past. I remember my first connect being 1200bps. Sadly though I have visited those speeds for some short periods over the last 6 weeks or so.

As good and consistent as ISDN is, I still dont want any Telkom products near me.

BTW, its not the ISP thats the problem. Its the physical Telkom line - ie. its not like the ISP is capping your speed at all (hopefully).
 
Yes... but also what about the contention ratios?
Is this not the ultimate problem ….… too many
of us fighting over limited bandwidth because Telkom
have created an artificial shortage.
They are charging exorbitant rates for the submarine
cable feeds… and then to add insult to injury refuse
to supply sub 32M feeds to companies like IS, UUnet
and Sentech???
i.e. Try buying a 5 or 10M feed... Telkom will tell you to
take 32M or nothing!!!

Also - The Sentech license is supposed to ensure that Telkom
sells this bandwidth to Sentech at a discounted rate.
But guess what... they are playing games and it will probably
have to be a high court rulling (remember the At&T case) that
forces the issue.
In the meanwhile... we all suffer.

I had been using Telkom dialup until MyWireless appeared. I used to get 52kb/s as the norm until I changed to the prepaid system, and on that very day that I changed my speeds immediately dropped to 48kb/s, but the telkom helpdesk guy tried to convince me that it my line [}:)]. Been using MyWireless since it appeared and will never go back [:D]
 
That sounds just like Telkom.. both of the above posts. Man its a lovely country.. for what you pay for dialup you are getting royally screwed IMO i.t.o bytes received etc
