Hey

I got the new unshaped and uncapped account from mweb, but for some reason the unshaped doesn't seem to be doing what it is supost to do... When i download on my dad's PC i still lag when playing a game on a different PC. Do i need a specific modem to use unshaped internet?, or is it a problem with mweb that requires me to phone them? Also when i wanted to use 4meg/s broadband sconnection it also didnt work due the phone lines in our area being to old (says Telkom), so could this be the problem?

Thanks :(

You need to define the problem a bit better as we don't have a clue what you are talking about.

Make sure you limit your download to max at 300K/s (you should try and find out which one is best for your balanced gaming/download needs) as you want to leave some capacity for your game data on the same ADSL line.

In theroy 4096kbps/8 give you 512Kilobytes per second download speed, but in SA due to various restrictions (international capacity, line quality.etc) we get max out around 400 odd kilobytes per second download.

Any kind of downloads increase latency. Higher latency = lag. Shaped/Unshaped...doesn't matter here.

There is nothing you can do about it except stop the download. Even if you throttle it you'll still get lag spikes.

You can try enabling some QoS, but it won't help much.

hmm did test with two accounts long ago using at same time one downloading and one for gaming and dont remember latency increasing or lagging my game

so maybe its good idea for you to get two accounts if i remember my results right

Simply getting another router won't solve your latency issues with you games while you're downloading, unless you get one that has decent QoS settings thats easy to configure.
QoS would only help to a certain extent. You won't be able to download at 400kB/s and get a ping of 50ms or less in your game. I've been able to download at 260kB/s and still have a reasonable ping in my games.
Just note that uploads could also increase your ping dramatically!

4Mbps ADSL is supposed to synchronize at 4096kbps down & 512kbps up. If you're only downloading/uploading at half of the maximum rate, you should still be able to get decent latencies I suppose.

Merenwenrage, I really doubt that it would make a difference in terms of in-game latency to use 2 accounts simultaneously: 1 for the game & another for downloading
I would guess that you would get exactly the same latency when you download/upload at the same speed and use a single unshaped account.

thanks for the reply's, but what is unshaped do then as i suppose i got it all wrong...

Unshaped means the ISP does not prioritise certain types of traffic over others. All traffic get the same priority as opposed to shaped ISPs that give higher priority to Web browsing, email etc and lower priority to P2P, torrents etc.

Edit: Your problem stems from the fact that your downloads eat up all your bandwidth at the expense of your gaming, no distinction is made between the two tasks.

You can setup something like a linux router/gateway to prioritise your local LAN based traffic before it hits the internet.

QoS only helps if your downloads aren't utilising 100% of the line. QoS in combination with rate-limiting would be what you're looking for. If you're downloading via HTTP, then you can do the download rate-limiting with a transparent SQUID proxy on a linux box.
