Hi All,

I just want to ask for some advice on which modem to buy before I go out and waste moola on something rubbish.

Im currently using my friends Trendnet TEW-658BRM (absolutely hate it) constant connectivity errors. I have to reset and restart the modem before I can log on again (makes over night downloads a pain). P.S both my ISP, OpenWeb and Telkom say that the modem is at fault.

Is there any advantage for modems such as the above and others that you see at incredible corruption which cost R800+ worth it? Over modems that cost R150-R500?

Also, I hear that having a good router coupled with your modem (even if your modem has wifi) is much better in a household where there are many (7) wifi hogging devices? Somebody in another thread recommended this one

To sum it all up, what ADSL modem and/or router set up would you guys suggest? for say R600-R700, maybe a bit more.

TIA! :D

TP-Link modems are great for their price.

Have a look at this one:

I personally would recommend to steer clear of tp-link. I have a whole lot of remote sites and most of them were on tp-link routers. I spent the first 20 mins each day phoning people on site and asking them to reset the routers because they were hanging.
I have a tp-link at home which isnt terrible but it does require a reboot at least once a week.

Go for the dlink one from telkom,it has 3g dongle option for when you need backup and its been pretty reliable for me so far.

I think its the dlink d2750u or something along those lines sell for around R600 at telkom shops.

install dd-wrt, I did it on my tp-links 3 months ago to overcome similar problems (it was a last resort before buying new routers), they've been rock solid ever since, I think I've rebooted one once.

Thats not bad, 3g fail over sounds pretty good! Any connection or syncing issues?

I've installed a bunch of TP-Link routers for clients, non of them have any issues with having to reboot the routers at all.

Can check one remotely a bit later to check it's uptime

Edit:
Here you go: Uptime.png

18 Days uptime and most likely due to a power failure knowing that site.

It's a TP-Link TD-W8960N

Nope non at all,I did have an issue with disconnects on my 3g side but that turned out to be sim issue and a sim swop sorted that out for me.

I had a plain d link adsl router in the past and I never had any issues with that one either until lightning fried it a few years ago.

This site have some routers with the detailed info, check out see if some items you're interested

Its actually "bad" for performance if you dont reboot it about once every 24hours for about 30min, new IP's tend to make the connection and speed better.

Only if your port has gone bad on the exchange side.

My router regularly goes weeks and even months without rebooting or reconnecting without any performance degradation.
