Just a thought. Would you consider buying a modified vehicle?

What risks are associated with the vehicle if for example it's over 100k and out motor/service plan ?
 
If you do, be sure to have the car inspected, and try to get detailed receipts for any work that's been done.
 
I wouldn't recommend this unless you plan to use it as a second (Weekend) car.
Or lots of cash to pay up if something goes wrong?
 
Would depends on a few things for me.

1. Define "modifications". This is an IT orientated forum and I've met a few members in person. To some of those members a modified car is one that has aftermarket seat covers or alloy rims. I jest not.
2. If the modifications are mild (stage 1 to stage 2). Who did them? If done in a backyard set-up. Chances are I'd walk.
3. If the modifications are wild (stage 3 or addition of turbo or supercharger or NOS) then I would consider the car if it was done by a reputable entity.

In all the scenarios above I still would not touch any second hand car unless it passed an independent inspection test. Something like the AA test.

My current car was bought stock standard second hand with half that amount of kilos. Ive since had her worked on extensively. NOS, brakes, turbo and stage 3 upgrades were undertaken by the most reputable OPC specialist in JHB. I would sell this car to my best friend in a heartbeat. Not all modified cars are dogs.

Eyes wide open and don't assume anything.
 
You need to declare at least major changes or performance enhancements to your Insurer and depending on the insurer and your profile could pick up hassles
 
Guys was just curious... my friend wanted to buy a car that had revo stage 2.

Told him about the insurance and warranty issues he would encounter.

The dealership he wants to buy the car at seemed abit dodge. Sales person was like "if anything goes wrong we can fix it as we have our own workshop as we are RMI Approved". That already set off alarm bells. Seems his seriously dead set on getting it

Revo stage 2 on a VW (to my mind) isn't a major mod. Still insist on a 3rd party indi inspection. And go for an aftermarket warranty. And what Hemi said about declaring to insurers. There's inherit risk in any second hand deal. To say that a modified software upgrade on a car make it any less reliable than an unmodified car is unfair imo. As long as the dealership has been around for a few years and isn't listed all over the net for ripping people off... Also suggest that he get the previous owners details and call them to ask about the car they traded in.
 
I'd avoid it if possible, unless you want to mod it yourself.

Get a mechanic to check it out, not one of those AA tests.

Wesbank required a Bosch test on a Picanto I sold - the checklist ticked ABS as working... The car doesn't have ABS :D
