I was told that I have a white woman's attitude to money ... LOL! No surprises there, since I am indeed a white woman.

The person who said this to me, did not mean it an an insult at all, simply reflecting the fact that I keep an eye on my money, that if I owe someone I make sure to pay them, and if they owe me, I'll hunt them down and collect what is owing to me :)

But is this more a characteristic of white people? I must say, in my experience of certain other ethnic groups (Indian and black people), I do find that they are more 'community minded' and 'family minded' when it comes to money and the appropriation thereof. In other words, there is more of a sense of 'let's help each other' with these groups, whereas (again in my own experience) with white people, there is more of a 'each one for himself' attitude.

Your thoughts on it?

100% correct. we are like that. and people always take advantage and never pay back...

i have people that owe me R100, R1400 and R1400...

i wish they had the white woman's attitude to money:D

There's a beggar in Edenvale that owed me R20.

He kept on asking me to lend him R5, after suffering for 4 weeks with his persistent asking, I lent him R20. I made double dead sure that he was aware that I was lending him the money and that he had better pay it back tomorrow. I even got him to agree that he would pay it back tomorrow before giving it to him.

Then, for the next four or five months, every time he came to me asking me to lend him R5, I asked him for my R20 back.
Then I started I badgered him every chance I got.

About 2 weeks before I left Gauteng, the bastard gave me back my R20.

Go figure.
:D

I'm sucky like that.

I'll pay off debt immediately, but if someone asks me for money I won't lend it to them, I'll give it to them and write it off. Whether or not they pay it back is their prerogative. I just don't budget for it then - at least that way there's no bad blood in friendships or family issues.

What about those lousy people that you lend money to and then you have keep on asking them for it ? I hate those , thats why now I just dont lend money. Some people just take advantage of someone with a kind heart. I will give a bedgar some food / fruits etc but money is a no no.

Yea I won't lend money.

I never actually ask for it back and assume people will give it back, as it's rightfully mine anyway. Also when it comes to food at the office some people are in meetings or no cash etc ... you never see it again.

Lady at work dropped my brand new R1800.00 HDD, people here collectivly owe me about R500.00 and my exgirlfriend owes me R20,000.00+.

I'm done with helping

I thought you were Indian somehow. Dunno where I got that impression.

/raises hand

Know all about that **** and so done with it.
Don't even lend out R50 anymore - rather just give it and be done with it.
Still waiting for R5.5k to just randomly drop out of the air to me.

Why did I find this thread?
Now I'm de-moer in again...

Good ! You live in Somerset West ... there must be much nicer scenery to admire than all my old posts.

Perhaps people in poorer communities give when they got and hope that when the inevitable hard times comes knocking on their doors those that they gave to will reciprocate.
