I've been using the same 17 inch CRT on one of my computers for nearly six years now. And recently, it started...whistling.

A high pitched sound is coming from the monitor and it has given me the mother of all headaches. It is a recent occurence, nothing has changed as far as I know and it's a constant ringing sound like tinnitus with some intermittent varying.

Any idea what could be causing this and how to fix it? Or should I boot the screen?

Time for an upgrade ;) Mine used to do it and a swift slap to its roof would fix it for 10 minutes and then it would start again.....

Common sense dictates that after 5 years CRT monitors are only good for preschool children. A 22" or bigger LCD is long over due mate. This is available for under R2000 your CRT has done the business time to take it outside and shoot it

Probably dry connections or 'blown' caps in the power circuit due to lightning or power supply (eskom line) problems.

Have you had it connected to a UPS? If not--get a UPS for your PC and new LCD as well.

sounds like the line output transformer could be the cause, might be the switching transistor... hard to say without seeing it - either way these are things you should not even think of touching - repair cost could be anything from 150 - 600 - you might think about donating it to places that recycle for whatever - don't get a wide if your card is not up to it, avoid 15" - 17 and 19 are ok
