Monitor Problem

I'm using a GeForce FX5200 graphics card (actually Asus V9520-X) with a compaq MV 740 monitor. Using the Nvidia software I increased the monitor display from 65Hz to 100Hz.

A few days later, on powerup, the monitor doesn't work. The monitor has it's own power supply (not from PC) when I power up the PC the amber light on the monitor switches to green for a split second before going back to amber.

There are no bleeps coming from the Mobo (so there does not appear to be a mobo issue) and by the sound of the disks spinning it, it seems all is normal.

I have disconnected all PCI peripherals, except the AGP graphics card and still nothing.

I cannot try to run the monitor from the mobo coz I need a male to female adaptor (which I don't have on hand)

I looked online and saw that the MV740 specs are for 75Hz.

Could this be my problem?
 
a long time ago i had a similar problem... All I did was take the gfx card out and plug it in again and then it worked :eek: :confused: :eek:

give it a bash
 
Steve I looked online and saw that the max refresh rate for tha monitor is 75mhz.
Running it at that 100mhz could have damaged your monitor
 
or try and borrow a monitor that can handle 100, bring it down to 75 and plug your own monitor back in. Or try and plug your monitor on a system that's running at max 75 to see if the monitor is shot
 
your bios post screen will be 640x480, 60hz
So, if just switching on your pc and you dont see the normal messages about your cpu, hard drives etc then the refresh rate isnt the problem (i.e. lowering it in windows wont help now)

100hz for a monitor, unless it is a decent monitor, is a tad bit high:-)...it's probably busted...although if the correct driver was loaded in windows then you wouldnt have been able to select 100hz as your refresh rate..
 
reboot in safe mode and see if the monitor comes on- if yes = remove all drivers for that graphic card restart and load basic drivers and see it still does the same.

Do you see the bios details at start up ? ( meant to ask this first)
 
try f8 on startup, select vga mode, boot to windows, adjust your refresh rate and reboot
that will do if it is a refreshrate issue.
if the monitor is infact broke try a tv repair place, some of them can repair monitors.
or buy a flash new one :D

K gonna try all this, I get nothing on startup, the first thing that happens is monitor switches on then immediately off, rest of startup process sounds like it continues normally.

It's no fun without a spare monitor or graphics card (charity huh...I guess it has a downside)

Tried reseating the graphics card, a few times, been wondering if using a bootup disk will work, will try that too.
 
Nope that didn't work, either pressing F8 or using the XP disk at startup, monitor switches off first thing.

Think I might open up the monitor, is it a simple thing of having a fuse blown or am I being naive?
 
Do NOT open your monitor... its most likely ur gfx card thats stuffed try it in a diff machine or ttry a diff gfx card in ur machine
 
you're right, I will try to be patient as I wait for a friend to come over with his box to see if it works on his sys or not. I do suspect the gfx card even though I only bought it (and the mobo) a few months ago
 
St3ve please check the slots for dust etc and just make sure they making the proper contact.
 
Killadoob he would need to be able to get into windows to do that
 
I'm not trying to sound elitist, but the level of troubleshooting skills is resembling the level of troubleshooting skillz
 
What happens when you increase your refresh rate is that it causes your monitors temp to increase, if your monitor, as some have mentioned was only designed to work with a max refresh rate of 75hz and you ran it at 100hz, then the chance that uv fried something or damaged it is very high.
Next time check the manual...

Well I think I just bought one of Guru's old IBM monitors for R1 at the charity shop.

I plugged it in and then tried to switch on PC, nothing at all, switch not working. So as I pulled out the plug from the PC there was a power trip.

Now I see that the LED on the mobo is on and the light on the monitor is on, but when I press either the on button or the reboot button on the front of the PC box I get Nada.

So now I've removed the mobo (thought I might find a screw or something lying underneath) nothing, replaced the mobo and then plugged into PSU. After that I connected the cables inside the pc to the power supply cables and got a bit of fan spin, which stopped. So now I'm thinking I could have a faulty PSU and a faulty graphics card and possibly a faulty mobo, although the mobo LED is on.

I'll post again when the situation changes... as for now I'm stumped.

One other thing that may have led to this, I noticed that on some occcasions my flashdisk would cause the XP machine to freeze, complete screen blank, when I removed the flashdisk the pc would reboot itself and all would be okay. hmmm

Try swap ur psu with another one, if the problem persists, it could b ur mobo. also plug ur screen in2 another pc,if it works then u kno its fine.
 
just what the other guy said :

when u boot your press shirt
like shirt f8 repeat till an options screen comes
boot into safe mode
uninstall vga from there
