Hi there

I want to set up a WLAN and share an internet connection with 5 of my friends! My concern is that some1 will abuse this and download 24/7 as apposed to download friendly hours( 1am - 8am )

Is there a free program that allows me monitor ( and even disconnect ) a user on my WLAN according to their internet usage???

This will be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks

i dont know if it will do exactly what you want, but you could try netlimiter

Get an old pc and install something like smoothwall on it. Will give you a lot more options for managing your connection. There is also a lot of online support if you are getting stuck.

Otherwise, just stick some software on everyone's PC and donner the okes who go over their limit :)

Cheers, Nick

I'll try netlimiter

Instead of having a server pc collecting the data, what about having a website????

Nickste,

Does smoothwall work on a WLAN to monitor internet usage only??

Thanks

I think it does. Too be honest I haven't got it setup myself, but I'm pretty sure that it will support it. Any other forum members have some more experiance?

Cheers, Nick

Smoothwall is like 200-300mb to download..Geez

Does any1 hav a zipped version...?

Have a look at IPCOP as well. 45mb-ish Download if I remember correctly. Very easy to install and maintain, and with some addons, you should be able to achieve what you want. www.ipcop.org

hotspot management

Hi headstrong,

Check out www.skyrove.com (our solution)

Basically, you can have your mates pay for access per MB.

You can set the price yourself, so you can charge just enough to cover your costs, or some extra to cover your setup costs too.

Hope this helps.

Henk

Hi Henk

Instead of charging them per mb.. Can i charge them a fixed rate and assign them an amount of bandwidth??

Does skyrove work with the linksys wrt54g because i've allready got 1?

skyrove

headstrong,

1. The WRT54G will work as long as it's not a version 5 router.

2. For 'fixed rate' bandwidth, you can use our voucher system. (which is still in Alpha testing at the moment) You as the hotspot owner will buy vouchers from us and then re-sell them to any clients. That way you can make an agreement with neighbours that they have to buy, say, R200 worth of vouchers every month. Contact me for more details on this if you wish.

We're working on some other new features as well.

However, we like simplicity. Unless you really need to charge a flatrate, I suggest you use the Skyrove Prepaid system. You then don't have to worry at all about collecting monies from people at the end of the month. You simply receive payment from us.

If you need any support setting up infrastructure, you can contact RedButton. They install Skyrove-enabled hotspots at student digs, amongs others.

Henk

p.s. you can contact me directly on henk at skyrove.com
