A Vervet monkey was burnt to death in Kagiso informal settlement, west of Johannesburg, after residents believed it was linked to witchcraft.

"In an incident described as 'barbaric' by the Community-led Animal Welfare (Claw), residents chanted 'kill that witch!'," The Star newspaper reported on Monday.

It reported that the monkey wandered into the settlement last week Monday, May 23, and was pelted with stones, shot at by police, and then burnt to death.

The monkey fled the mob and temporarily found shelter in a tree, but was pulled out, put in a bucket and doused in petrol.

"Someone struck a match. (The monkey) got out of the bucket and dropped down dead. They continued throwing stones at it," Kagiso resident, Tebogo Moswetsi was reported as saying.

Brain dead idiots.

"Me no like. Me burn. Ha!"

In the Transkei they kill vervets because the native's says the monkey's steal "milk" from their cows!

If only we could figure out a way to potray ANC Guvment "leaders" as "witches"

i know white farmers that believe the same crap ... it's an idiot thing

Yes, people, this **** happens. This is the monumental retardation we have in South Africa. And we wonder why the ANC keeps getting votes despite screwing poor people over.

The point is, if you believe in witchcraft monkeys, snails terrorising people, tokelossies stealing court dockets and aids-curing showers, your reasoning skills leave a lot to be desired.

Hectic! People in the black community always assume the worst when ever an animal/bird..etc that is not common in the area is found. On my street in Madombidzha (15KM south-west of Louis Trichardt), my yard is filled with many large trees. Our neighbors and most of the families in my community believe that trees attract witches..and most of them have empty yards and continue to fell tree in the vicinity. You are probably going, :wtf:

In December of 2009, i walked outside, and discovered a velvet monkey in the tree in the yard. I was startled, because the bush is quite far from the house. It jumped onto of the neighbors roof and when people saw it they went ballistic!

I think its just ignorance, because the black communities closer to mountains and the veld get along fine with such incidents..

No, there are not. Only those uneducated animals at places like Kagiso that will be able to link a monkey to witchcraft and decide to burn it in a mob. :wtf:

Judge not, Europe killed all their monkeys in the middle ages, look at them now, let us be please and maybe we might catch up, and I am personally touched by this as the vervet is my animal (totem) (Bakgatla---, sub-species of the Tswana).

So because Europeans did it, we should withold criticizism from people who do it elsewhere? That what you saying?

this is all fine and I agree, but do you think it is something innate in the people?
