Must be awesome living the good life. I was working 5pm-3am to make ends meat and when I wasn't I had ZERO time for anything other than my studies.

Then again the stellenbosch graduate "electrical engineer" working at our firm has no idea how to even work a multimeter or test a fuse, so I'm not surprised.

Yes, after a day of hard work, I don't want to go and wash dishes and iron my clothes, I want to sit down in front of the tv and do nothing. And while we are busy insulting each other: I don't have such an easy job as you, I am actually tired when I get home, how about you go and do some REAL work, then you will also be tired after work and not have enough energy to clean up after yourself...

And yes, lets judge all the stellenbosch electrical engineers by the one that works at the firm you work at... please...

Wow. I come from a family with money but I had to leave home @ 19. I have had to pay for everything myself and drove the same car for the first 6 or so years. I only had DSTV after my wife and I bought our house and will disconnect it after SWC.

R10k per month is a lot of money, and it's also not a lot of money!

In the end, if your parents can support your lifestyle, then great. I don't think it will be to your advantage in the future, but hey what do I know? I was just forced to do it the hard way! Maybe I'm just a little jealous.. :)

Oh, and I didn't have a maid either, learnt to cook and socialise 50% of my weekends when I was younger because I just didn't have the money to get myself and some tart pissed :)

The only down side now is.. I cook better than my wife and seem to take that responsibility on more than she does!

No matter what you have studied, and what the people here have to say, big up to you for at least acknowledging you need to budget, and when you didn't know how to, you tried.. That's the first step to becoming a grown up and not a greasy haired student :)
 
@DJ and FuNkEr - Jeez, I didn't realise I was peeving so many people of with my comments...given that most of the threads seemed almost immediately get derailed with inane comments. Anyway the attack in DJ's post #40 has indicated that he has a wonderful command of the English language and he was incredibly succinct in lambasting me...He obviously didn't get it all that morning.... :) Oh well, pick yourself up dust yourself off and get on with the game.

I do realise I am very privileged to have gotten almost everything from my parents and I do appreciate it a lot. But it is time to do my own thing now, I would rather start now and have my parents as backup if something goes wrong...

I will give that my wording was maybe a bit of, but everyone knew what I was trying to say, I am Afrikaans so my English isn't THAT great.
 
Mate, I only stumble upon this article now...wow! Don't worry if your parents can afford it so be it! Would PDiddy allow his kids to starve? NO..

One thing I like about this is that you leave room for improvement...very mature from your side! Great stuff...you can save from the cell phone/DSTV and Domestic Worker. We pay R160p/m for our domestic worker...she only comes in every 2cnd Friday and does a thorough spring clean and washing! The other times we clean the flat ourselves.

I'm seriously going to look at TOPTV from next month on...DSTV is just such a waste, we find ourselves wathing movies on dvd or at the Ster Kine every weekend because DSTV is simply NOT WORTH it...for R250pm I'll get used to TOP TV.

ON the food front, my wife and I both work so we come from work at 5ish and we don't have time to cook or even the energy...this is a falable cause because we then waste the food budget!

One thing I can't seem to stick with is sticking to a budget!

But don't worry man enjoy studying and student life...we are meant to struggle while being a student, I can remember, I had jobs while studying, and in 2008 I had internship which paid R3500, that was my budget, lol, R3000 would go towards my Alfa...I loved that car, and then I'll manage with the R500 lmao...obviously having a GF that works and parents are God's blessings !!!

Actually, I might have to agree on that one. Went for an interview at a very small time company once. They only had one other engineer (Mechatronics from Stell). The guy didn't know what I2C was. Now I understand he wasnt pure electronics but if you don't know what I2C is or how to program a uC (not the code, just how to wire the pins [hello datasheet] etc.), you must've not been paying attention to half of your subjects.

@StellenboschStudent Going to have to get used to low pay if you plan on staying in academia :) If you want decent pay while in academia, try getting a post-doc with an EU university. Otherwise jump ship into commercial research engineering position (hello CSIR) or stick it out for a few years and get certified as a PrEng and charge mad consulting fees. All of my supervisors chose the latter (obviously, else I wouldn't have known them :p). The former requires you to have a good publication resume and they'll find you first AFAIK :p
 
Watsup with you ous? You all know damn well that varsity was NOT as you say it was...it was not all slave labour etc. And voicy, don't lie, its totally impossible to be fuly commited to your studies while hot tail is lurking in the hostel coridors or the library...you guys are talking BS now...

StelliesStudent...don't fret mate, change university if you will, go to UWC where I went to...UWC students are MUCH more respected lol...at least what I heard!

You're going to need to start differentiating between 'wants' and 'needs'. Welcome to the real world :)
 
ahhh, dude, I think once you get rid of that dstv, you'll find yourself with a good hour to 2 hours of free time to spend. and what do you do with such time? clean :).

I know it sounds awful, but if you spend 10-20 minutes a day cleaning, you'll find it's not so bad :). At least you're lucky enough to have such a massive splurge from your parents ;), My parents don't understand that I'm a student, and R300 a month won't last very long :p.
 
I find cleaning kinda therapeutic - especially sweeping the floor and wiping off dust :D
