Moose Does Bo-Plaas!

Speaking as a corporate-bound office worker clustered between walls in the big city, you are so privileged & your life seems such an adventure.. I just want to be there too.

There are advantages to living here, but then I have no medical assistance and the shops suck, miss live concerts and events, no attractions like microbrewery or wine farms or farmer markets, beaches suck for swimming......

But yes, I get you, I enjoy the quietness of the place and the stark beauty and would rather favour this above the city and her offerings! :p

worth every moment trust me
i got lost on Saturday night and ended up drunk in the Onverklaarbar at Tankwa Tented Camp in the Northern Cape. Again, Ive been there like 20 times now. Have you been there? I highly recommend it

I once braai's on the National road between Calvinia and Williston, portable braai, 11H00 on a sunday night, smack bang in the middle of the road for two hours....

Righty, Wagon is mostly packed, just the cold and mostly important consumables to be loaded in the morning, at 07H55 I shall meet the other two chariots and we shall head into the interior...... we be 10 souls with another three joining us on Saturday....

Below is the weather forecast, home at the coast, misty, wet and cold.... 150km inland.... double the temp.... Perfect beer weather......

The previous night had seen the wet Atlantic spread her blanket of mist over the harsh Namib coastal strip, but as we departed and headed Eastwards once again, the view from the new tarred road on the summit of the Dunes gave a brilliant view of the rising sun on the horizon... (Apologies for the poor quality of pics)

1 A Mystical morning (Medium).jpg

The surrounding landscape was still barren even after receiving above average rainfall for the season....

2 A dry Road (Medium).jpg

In the middle of nowhere we had to stop as we encountered roadworks, which we found strange seeing as the road was only two years old......

3 Roadworks (Medium).jpg

About an hour from our destination the road turned a sharp curve and headed towards the meandering river...

4 Heading Down to the River (Medium).jpg

It was a pleasure driving on this newly surfaced road for in twenty minutes we would be leaving her to drive once again on good ol' wild west dirt roads....

How many km to boplaas.

From My house , only 169km........

After 90km of being spoilt on a tar road we turned off onto the descending dirt track, heading the last five or so kilometres back down to the river......

5 The End of the tar (2) (Medium).jpg

It was refreshing to drive the remaining part of the journey along a strangely quiet road without a single other vehicle disturbing our small convoy...... then the road turned Eastwards again as we ran parallel to the river.

6 The Return of the River (Medium).jpg

On arriving at the Camp as per two weeks ago, we were the only people there, the Camp Manager recognising the cars not even bothering to come down to the campsite......

7 Setting up Camp (Medium).jpg

Considering we were only spending two nights here, the wood stock seemed pretty over the top....... Rule in these here parts, No Wood Goes Home....

8 Getting Wood (Medium).jpg

Once we were all sorted it was time for a bit of paddling whilst a lone Fish Eagle soared above us....

So FirstBornMoose and I left the group and wandered down to the lazy river, armed with a few ice cold toots we shoved off into the middle of the river....

For those of you that do not know this part of your country, there is practically nobody out here, this river runs between the two National Parks forming a Transfrontier National Park, Ai Ais In Namibia and The Richterveldt National Park. Due to Covid, the place is even more devoid of tourist types....

It was warm and quiet save for the odd fish Eagle or duck flying past, the air hardly moving..... This was paradise in another form.....

9 A Man And His Beer (Medium).jpg

A Man and his beer, what could he not do......?

10 A Man And His beer (Medium).jpg

One got a different perspective of the river and surrounding hills whilst floating in the middle of nowhere, sipping on a cold one, the Covid World a lifetime away....

11 Nobody on the water (Medium).jpg

As I glanced to the East up the silent river, contemplating my journey for the next day or perhaps West downstream, the world had once again become my oyster.....

12 Looking East (Medium).jpg

A voice called out from the embankment , "Moose! We lighting the fire bra!, you coming in?"

I took another cold swig from the can and looked downstream once again, "Tonight we braai like 1987..."

13 Looking West (Medium).jpg

The following morning some of the lads came up with a braai plan, take wood, A Gazebo and wors with a few beers, paddle across the river onto a Sandbar on the SA side and have a wors braai.....

This is how one should spend a Saturday afternoon....

AAA Saturday Aftgernoon.jpg

Must Say it was quite an adventure to paddle everything over the river to the SA side to have a braai, needless to say I was called back to the Namibian side when a troop of Vervet monkeys trashed our campsite...

AAA Braaing in SA.jpg

Off Course the best part of the day is the evening fire, the beer, the meat, the geselsskap...... The stars...... stunning evening,

AAA Campfire Chatter.jpg

Road back home went past a few abandoned diamond mines....

AAA Bulldozer.JPG

Once past Skull Rock we knew the tar road would be a mere 15 minutes away, Moose already planning the next camping trip to Ai Ais......

Here ends the tale of the Camp To Bo Plaas! :)
