In the Namibian desert...
Some of you might know that after having residing in a quiet corner of the Namib desert, we are looking at moving down to the Cape.

There are a number of reasons for this, one being that the wife wants to be closer to her parents as they approach their twilight years, the other being that the mine is nearing it's life and is starting to downsize. We anticipate the income to our store will drop by about 20% over the next two years, although since the restrictions to enter this part of the world have been lifted, the sales have actually increased. Nevertheless we are 4 partners at the business, with the wife and I controlling 50% and with two of out three kids out of the house for education, one in the Cape we are starting to think it is time to start moving....

Last week I received my PR for SA.

Question, I need a medical aid with a Gap cover that will be suffice for myself and 4 dependents.

I am on a Namibian medical aid, paying over 12000 a month that is actually bloody good , but it is linked to our current business.

What medical aid are you on?
How Many people are you covering?
What are you paying?

I am trying to trim the budget , so looking at something in the 9000 pm range.....

I thank ye!

I was kicked off my mom's medical aid at age 21. Just make sure about the ages as well

Bonita's will keep you on until 24/25 as long as you can prove that the dependant is studying & still supported by you.

Most medical aids in fact.

I run a hospital plan only (Coastal Core) through Discovery, which covers myself and my wife (38 and 37), plus our two children (7 and 4) which costs 4109.57 per month. Gap Cover (essential) is through Stratum which is R355 per month.

You mean your mom kicked you off.

You have anyone as a dependent on your medical aid, you just pay full adult price then.

And that's the difference at 21, you go from child dependant to adult dependent and the cost doubles.

Exact same here.

Yeah. It was cheaper to go on my own

Discovery Classic Comprehensive, very good and pays for close to everything (and I mean it, I see 700k last year) but definitely not cheap.

4.8k for me, 4.6k for your wife and 900 per kid.

You could look at an option a bit cheaper in Discovery’s comprehensive series.

+1 for this, never once argued a claim. Honestly they were incredible and covered any specialist, doctor, dentist, surgery

Discovery is by far the best but generally the most expensive.
Just ask any doctor, they have the less issues with Discovery out of all the medical aids for getting paiments, claiming things etc. Discovery also covers the widest range of specialists and hospitals, where other medical aids are very fussy when it comes to where you may go and who you may use.

IIRC me and my sister was still on my dad's Discovery while we were students, in fact I am still on my dad's Discovery because I'm disabled, so I'm a disabled adult dependent on his policy which works out much cheaper than me going on my own. I'm not sure what he pays in total for him and my mom and me, but my part which I pay is R1980 per month.

Personally I'm just on a Discovery Hospital plan.

Don't just go for the cheapest, it's like car insurance where the cheap options might save you some money month to month, but when it comes to claim time they don't do much to assist you and will fight you every step of the way.

After that look into full vs hospital coverage. A generic adult that's not sickly or has any major issues doesn't need full cover (as long as you have enough savings to cover daily generic expenses). Gap cover is also a bit of a grey spot, the sellers are quick to point out made up gap numbers which won't be covered by medical aids, but a lot of it can be taken with a pinch of salt.

Going for an op you can for example negotiate with the surgeon and hardware providers, they'll usually scrap any extras not covered by medical aid as its not worth it for them to try and collect those ridiculous amounts (although there are exceptions, for example "planned" things such as childbirth, buying/paying for certain things such as > 1 MRI scan per year, socks and other small physical items which may cost a few low K etc). Most cheaper gaps don't pay for a lot of the incidentals you might need covered anyway, but it's up to you as to how safe you want to feel, what you can spend, your savings etc.

Broadband Brethren, I thank you for all the informative feedback..... it was an eye opener...

This being said, it seem's that we will be able to keep our Namibian medical aid and use it whilst residing down there by the bay that is False and we are looking at reducing it down by a tier, thus saving half the money and then adding gap cover that so many of you are suggesting....

This is great as I will not have to go and submit medical and tons of paperwork....

Now to find a small business that I can eke a small humble living from..... :erm: :D
