In the Namibian desert...
Some of you might know that after having residing in a quiet corner of the Namib desert, we are looking at moving down to the Cape.

There are a number of reasons for this, one being that the wife wants to be closer to her parents as they approach their twilight years, the other being that the mine is nearing it's life and is starting to downsize. We anticipate the income to our store will drop by about 20% over the next two years, although since the restrictions to enter this part of the world have been lifted, the sales have actually increased. Nevertheless we are 4 partners at the business, with the wife and I controlling 50% and with two of out three kids out of the house for education, one in the Cape we are starting to think it is time to start moving....

Last week I received my PR for SA.

So Question for those of you who live in the hood...

We are looking for a good primary school for LastBornMoose in the Helderberg basin!

What Schools to avoid?
What Schools can you suggest?

Currently Grade 3.

I Send you thanks! :D

The Helderberg basin has load of good primary schools, covering the entire price spectrum. (Incidentally, the other thing it has going for it is an incredibly good concentration of children-focused healthcare practitioners). Depends really on where you are staying - Somerset West has a lot of good ones (e.g. Beaumont), Strand has good ones (e.g. Lochnerhof), and if you are in Gordon's Bay like I am, then Gordon's Bay Primary is a fantastic choice.

I went to De Hoop in Somerset West. Was a good school back then.

Well private School here in Namibia we are paying R3000 a month....
My partner is paying R20k/month for his three children. A restaurant owner here in Melkbos is paying R10k/month for his one daughter. Thank god I'm childless.

You can expect to pay A LOT more down here. My kids school fees are just under R9000 each per month.

De Hoop and Beaumont are good schools. They are also popular so if it's for next year you may struggle to get a place as they will talk about catchment areas etc (Beach Road is not in their catchment area).

Private schools you should get a place if you apply now, but that's because they are more expensive. Fees for Curro Sitari for Grade 4 in 2018 are R4750 p/m (excluding optional /addons - aftercare, music etc). For Reddam about R9000 p/m.

FFS ... R9000 per kid per month!!!!

Get your kid a respectable state school (where the majority of the teachers' salaries are paid by the state) where the school fees are 2 - 3 grand per month and you'll be laughing.

The reason why private schools are 9 grand isn't because they are 3 or 4 times better than state schools. It's just that they have to pay the entire staff with parents' school fees.

Moose only drinks beer, so that part will be no problem.

The manufacturing of Beer is heavily dependent on the supply of water.

The only liquor that can have the claim of being something that is not THAT dependent on a huge supply of normal water is a distilled drink from a desert plant called TEQUILA!!!

More than likely staying in Beach Road......

A week of negotiations coming up!

Thanks!

Check out Hendrik Louw in Strand. Its basically just up the road from you. My wife and quite a few cousins went there. She says its a double medium school so they give classes in english as well.

I also spent my teenage years growing up in the same road. Lovely area.

Spent the earlier part of my childhood in Somerset West and went to Beaumont. Also an awesome school.
