More domains for SA

It's a really really stupid idea.
Lets sat that I am looking for the Speedy website.
I am in Port Shepstone.

What do I type?

Let me tell you what I type: speedy.co.za.

Or,

I am looking for speedy, I am in Ramsgate, I don't know that there is a speedy in Margate), so I type in speedy.ramsgate.za.
I get nothing.

Now what?

Now Eskom is going to create Eskom.capetown.za + Eskom.durban.za + Eskom.tshwane.za + Eskom.Pretoria.co.za + .... and charge us 30 million for each.

ROFL!

Lack of understanding of how domains work

I think some effort needs to be made in explaining how domains work before this scheme is implemented.

How often do you see/hear adverts using a domain without the 'www' prefix assuming people will naturally add it on. A case in point was a Plascon paint advert promoting "plascon.co.za".

Compare the following:

How often do you see large brands registering multiple domains instead of using sub domains... Instead of

You get

@AmaZulu: The prehistoric method is perfectly in line with the general state of South Africa's Internet ... :)

You are not going to be forced at gunpoint to use geographically named internet domains... But the possibility will be there.

@KirPlunk, understand that they're spending your tax money on this, instead of focusing on real problems that actually already exist.

There was some talk a while back regarding the introduction by InterNiC of a whole host of new international TLD's based on any word you choose. So if you wanted your brand name as a TLD you could get it (as in www.4x4.toyota). It certainly would open things up a LOT because cyber squatters have harvested just about all the good .com names a long time ago.

Haven't heard much more about this though.

oomjanniesedrankwinkel.tweebuffelsmeteenkoelmosrdoodgeskietfontein.za
i want it.

ROFLMAO! That was funny :D

@AmaZulu:
Uniform will probably NEVER update their text-email Tickets. The system is working and why pay more money to develop something if you are not going to get more money in? The issue is, where else can you register .co.za domains, well, just at Uniform. They got us all by the short and curlies. But a web service would have made my life a lot easier a year go... Oh and dont forget the latest billing technology Uniform introduced, its called a Credit Card
