More electricity price shocks

just eksom way of demanding more money. Ever notice that when they get % increase in prices approval, the power cuts stop?

We suvived winter without power cuts, the most demanding, now suddenly there isnt enough power for summer? Please.
 
I don’t get it, how does a price hike give us more electricity generation capacity? Why is it our responsibility to save power, and not government’s responsibility to ensure sufficient power? Why is the short supply of product now blamed on the consumer and not on the manufacturer?

My thoughts exactly.

Chances are people are going to be using a lot less electricity now that it costs so much, which is a saving in itself.
The thing is the man in the street is not the problem - it is the Mining Houses that use the bulk of the capacity Eskom produces. I think residential uses between 10 and 20% of the National Capacity.
I think the trouble is Eskom have existing contracts signed with companies like BHP Billiton who use an incredible amount of power in their smelters. Plus all the Gold and Platinum miners.
Plus there are new projects like Coega that will need power as well in the next 5 years.
Let me emphasise that I am not trying to finger the miners as it is not there fault things went pear shape, but a lazy and inept Government which needs everything spelled out to them. By this I mean they will go along merrily until something breaks. like the bolt at Koeberg and only then will they realise there is a problem and may attempt to fix it at a helluva expense to us all.

I stand by my claim that Government is the biggest contributor to inflation in the country. They set targets of around 6% per annum, but every Government Department is hell bent on getting their slice of the pie. All this has left the SA Consumer cash strapped, tired and stressed. In other parts of the world the Government would have been fired for placing such unnecessary strains and burdens on the working man.
 
The problem was that they ran out of coal. Eskom (and Irwin) denied this when Carte Blanche had their show but the NER report last week confirmed that as the problem. Dimwits are clueless. We use almost no electricity, have 1 heater on (the rest are gas but we can't leave a gas heater on during the night) and the appliances for washing yet our electricity bill is over R1100. It's a joke. I need to check the meters as I don't think the twits know what they are doing.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Instead of improving efficiency of electricity production on their end with proper maintenance schedules, the man in the street must not only save electricity but also pay more the electricity that he does use. That is absolutely up the pole:sick:.

Therefore, it seems to me quite extraordinary and administratively unjust that paying customers and the productive sectors of the economy should be summarily cut off through "pre-emptive" load-shedding and forced load reductions, before reasonable efforts have been taken to cut off electricity supply to the thieves and non-payers first.

I heard in summer we actually use more energy because of aircons, is this true?

I mean i know most of family in winter use gas heaters.
 
Uhm.. as mentioned, we heading into summer thus energy demand, as per Eskom reports even state that household consumption decreases. Now besides the stealing electricity which goes on they have to look at the industry consumption.

I'm thinking in summer these will push full steam ahead and might account for the increased usage.. Still why are they making the masses pay for industrial consumption?

Its a bit unfair.. mind ye, economies SA style is to charge the masses for least use ;)

WHERE are the subsidised solar geysers? WHERE are the CFL bulbs distributions? WHERE are the solar and L.E.D. traffic lights? WHERE are any plans to deploy solar and wind power to ramp up short term capacity? WHERE are the geyser blankets? WHERE are the geyser time switches? WHERE is subsidised roof insulation? WHERE are the task teams to disconnect non-payers and illegal connections?

My electricity bill is about 500kWh per month. I can't use less than that. It's impossible. Otherwise why bother to have a TV, computer, warm shower and hot food?

You can't SAVE more power than the bare minimum you need to live a 1st world life.

Spend a few billion of all that tax money we give you and start deploying mass initiatives that will save people electricity and money.

Otherwise, go fly to Zimbabwe with your big ears. Maybe they can use your expertise to finally hit that billion percent inflation target.

The only electrical shocks that need to be applied, Alec, are to the more sensitive areas of your anatomy.
 
The new government coming in 2009 will fire Alec immediately, he is just such a bad minister. A$$licking is no longer considered a must have ministerial character trait - Thabo I am looking at you. So I don't think we have to take what Alec says too seriously.

On the whole electricity saving thing, can government please explain why they leave the street lights on during the day? How is this saving electricity? Clean up your act first government before you talk about the rest of SA.
