Medical male circumcision is on the increase in Gauteng, the provincial health department said on Monday.

"More than 90,000 males underwent male medical circumcision in Gauteng public health facilities during the 2012/13 financial year," the department said in a statement.

It said 94,151 circumcisions had been conducted at 64 sites, including 41 clinics and two hospitals, across the province.

Medical male circumcision entails the full removal of the penis foreskin, fully exposing the head of the penis.

The department said Gauteng had seen a rising demand for this type of circumcision since the launch of the HIV counselling and testing campaign in 2010.

"All 64 sites provide patients with safe, clean, and hygienic procedures. Upon arrival, one receives counselling to understand the procedure and its benefits."

What do they do with the foreskins?

Does someone make a Buffalo Bill-style mask out of them?

Can see many having unprotected sex now because they have been told circumsion offers protection against HIV.

I've heard that the risk of HIV infection in cut males are a lot less. Wonder why? Is it perhaps the HIV-positive juices stuck under the foreskin and behind the mushroom that gets time to infect? Perhaps that was Zuma's thinking...wash that away :erm: :p

I suppose there's a lower risk of little cuts and tears happening without a foreskin.

No ... the skin there is very thin and the cells there can offer access to HIV. It might reduce the risk of contracting HIV .... but I worry that many of these men will see this as a excusem, throw caution to the wind and ride anything with a pulse bareback. Cut or uncut ... if you want to be safe .. then you need a condom. So ... with that in mind ... why cut your skin off if you need to wear a condom anyway to be safe. It is sounds stupid to me.

The thing is, if I recall those stats correctly, the difference was minute even percentage wise.

A doctor retired after performing countless thousands of circumcisions.

Having saved all the foreskins, he took a sackful of them to a leather company and asked that a useful memento be made.

A few weeks later he returned to collect his order and was presented with five attractive wallets.

In response to his disappointment the company advised him that after a bit of rubbing the wallets would turn into a five piece luggage set.

Are more getting cut... or is it just that less are doing it outside of the hospitals?
