More Pet Food Problems

Damn my vet just phoned me as well, I must stop feeding my dogs Vets Choice straight away.

They also told me to bring my dogs in to get checked...

I am also looking for some new food now...

My dogs actually stopped eating the Vets Choice 3-4 days ago, I wonder if they knew something?

I was going to be taking them to the vet this weekend if they didn't start eating....
 
Have you tried Eukanuba? I know they had a problem with that a few months ago, but it should be sorted out by now. Otherwise, feed them boiled chicken and rice for a few days, until you can get them to the vet. He's going to recommend the ch&rice diet anyway, if there's a digestive problem.

Well I'm currently feeding my cats Royal Canin Vet Exclusive For Neutered Young Males and my dog eats Purina Olympic.
 
PiesangTee - you would be correct - I heard on Highveld's news at 17:00 that Hill's Feline "special" diets are affected. Forget the word they used now.

Anyhow, concerns are still nagging for me, with Fayth and her Hill's J/D diet. If I have to, I'm going to phone up other vets tomorrow and see what they advise. Sort of like a 2nd opinion. I've still got a rather old bag of Vets Choice, which TJ never ate, so I'm not short of food for a few weeks. It's just a matter of finding a decent substitute until this crisis is over.
 
My manufacturing date on the bag is 27/11/06 do you guys think its safe??
 
If your pet has been eating the food for a while and they are not sick, then that bag of food is safe. If it is new food that you have just opened or is not yet opened it is best not to feed it to your pet until they determine how far this goes.

Anyone know if Dr Platzhund still has a call in session on the radio? Was it on 702? I can't find anything on their website

Oh bollocks, I feed my dogs Vets Choice! Someone mentioned that their dogs went off Vets Choice recently and I have noticed mine are also suddenly not so keen on it! FFS. Back to the BARF diet for me. All these so called premium brands are bad. Dogs are not supposed to eat wheat, maize, gluten etc.

Look at the ingredients listed on the packaging. By law they are listed in order of most to least part of the recipe. If the first ingredient is say wheat or maize then most of that food is just filler and bad. An exceptionally large proportion of pets allergies and illnesses are suposedly as a result of the gluten/maize in commercial foods.

The only reason I started feeding Vewts Choice again is due to time constraints. Eukanuba, Royal Canin and Hills made my dogs itch to hell and back. Vets Choice seems to be the least evil of a bad bunch but now I am going to have to get back into the BARF diet thing.....


We are all suckers and the pet food industry is screwing us out of our hard earned money at the expense of our best friends' health.
 
Freshy-ZN - My dogs used to have a skin problem as well - started feeding them Hills sensitive skin and they have not had problems since.

And yes, the pet food industry is RIPPING us a new one - I have 2 Ridgebacks x Bullmastiffs - and they chow a (16.5KG ??) bag every 1.5 weeks - and it is more than R400 per bag now !!!

Next time around, I might consider getting a hamster...
 
I go thru 20kgs of food a fortnight AND I usually try suplement it with other yummies like mince or meat. Thats Rottweilers for you...

Many are US brand names (the same food though), but note Eukanaba is there as well as Paws and Hills - SA brand names may differ...

The list says "Hill Country Fare" not "Hill's Science Diet" ... so hopefully Fayth's J/D won't be affected. Let's hope we get more news tommorrow.
 
The problem is that they may be the same product with a different US brand name... the point is that it's the source gluten used to add protein... I would seriously consider the rice and chicken thing someone suggested until further notice...
