Residents in Alberton, east of Johannesburg, can expect more power cuts next week, Ekurhuleni municipality said on Friday.

After more than five days with no electricity in five areas of Alberton last week, more outages were expected to happen from Sunday, said spokesman Sam Modiba.

This was due to a R5 million revamp of Truida Road sub-station, to be completed by the end of March.

"This is a major project that must go ahead as urgently as possible if we are to avoid a similar situation like the one some parts of the town experienced last week," said Modiba.

"While there will be interruptions, we have planned them in such a way that we minimise the inconvenience to the community."

Modiba said the next interruptions would be between 8pm on Sunday and 5am on Monday morning.

Affected areas would include Alberton CBD, Verwoerd Park, Florentia, New Redruth, and South Crest.

"We have teams on standby should there be unforeseen incidents that hamper our plans... We do apologise for the inconvenience this will cause, but we have no doubt that once done, the community will receive a better service," said Modiba.
