More RAM Protects your SSD

I could not agree more! Not only does it improve your SSD's lifespan, but it also increases your performance, until you run out of RAM...

I'd reckon the big culprits (for generating temp files) are the browsers that generate tonnes and tonnes of small files.

If you're using Adobe products like Photoshop, you can also dramatically increase your performance by using a RAM drive as your "scratch pad"!

When I got my 30GB OCZ Vertex like 3 years ago, I ran Ubuntu with a RAM drive for its /tmp, even though I only had like 8GB of RAM.

Now I'm using a 120 OCZ Agility 4 with a 4GB RAM drive for all my Windows temp files. Luckily I have 32GB of RAM, so standing off 4GB for my RAM drive is just pure awesomeness :D

I've once installed an Ubuntu VM completely in RAM and I wasn't even that impressed with its speed :(
Perhaps I should try something like that again on our Dell R720 server that has 128GB of RAM and 16 cores with HyperThreading...

Damn! Must have cost a pretty penny! :erm:

Yup. Those Dell R720 servers are like R100k with 32GB of RAM IIRC.

Fortunately we got the RAM a while back, when it was a lot cheaper. I mean, I bought 32GB of DDR3 1600MHz for my PC in mid Nov 2012, which set me back R1600. Now you'll struggle to get half of it (2x 8GB) for the same amount!
