It's small things like these which might ultimately sway a company (and individuals) over to Linux... who will want an OS full of holes anyway?
 
More anti-Microsoft FUD from the crazy Loonux crowd

So it phones home ... big freaking deal ... so does FireFox every hour looking for updates and most internet aware applications that I have installed like those from Google :).

I wish the Loonux folks would invest the same effort in making their desktop work properly and having one freaking standard and sorting their GPL 3.0 mess and political BS i.r.o having binary drivers inside the kernel than their FUD against Microsoft.

My desktops great thanks. Kubuntu (the KDE strong version of Ubuntu) Im sure looks a hell of a lot better than yours.....thanks mmmmkay. Im running the new Dapper Drake v6.06 LTS with KDE 3, and I promise you my desktop can do more than yours ;) and it looks better.

I dont have a system that can be effected by virus's. spyware or other rubbish. My desktop doesnt tell on me when Im doing something microsoft or captain copyright doesnt agree with, and best of all its free.

GPL3 is on its way, but it just an improvement on what already is. And if you are reffering to the whole SCO Unix claim (?) The new linux kernals have already written that out.

I also know that Sun congradulated Mark the otherday for Ubuntu, and said their would be support in the new versions for the SPARC 1000 and SPARC 2000 Sun microsystem processors. Which means you dont have to run Scolaris.

Ill laugh when Microsoft charges you per month subscription for Vista ;)

At least I know that Opera is doing it and I think I saw an option somewhere to turn it off. ;)

slightly OT but there is a lot of resistance to GPL3 - a lot of developers seem to be better served by pegging their work to GPL2
 
Do a search for Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Fix:rolleyes:
 
And windows vista is going to have the anti piracy stuff, really hard coded. from what i understand, removal may be very difficult if not impossible.
 
the thing is... if its your money then its your choice to what you buy.

sure you will say i am being ripped off by MS but arent we being ripped off by car dealers, telkom, eskom, and every other business out there? this is the reality of the matter regardless how you look at it.

besides, i am into windows coz of gaming... no need for patches for my OS to run a game... simply plug and play. PC issues? crashes? only if your OS and PC are not being tweaked and maintained like it should be.

useless,you aren't being ripped off if you utilize a free OS.
Ppl seem to have heavy misconceptions about Linux being some CLI only uber tool.
 
right now i dont really have time to try a new OS, i even have little time to play games at all! :D
 
I'll certainly give you that Fedora isn't quite up there on usability with Ubuntu. Thing is, I like the way my m$ box works. (Bear in mind I haven't actively played with linux for quite some time)

I like that I boot up and never see "Kernel error"
I like that I can install a game and it works first time
I like that my OS has plug-n-play support for nearly everything

I don't like that it's M$
I don't like the "spyware"
I don't like the Big Brother aspect

So if someone is willing to come install my box with Ubuntu that:
*Supports dual display in less than 10 clicks
*Lets me play my War3
*Lets me operate my sound and videos fine
*Lets me play guild wars
*Lets me browse
*Lets me develop with the same ease that I do now

Please feel free :D
 
That is kinda scary ic... (getting close to your 10k now...)

Actually reading through all this has given me a hankering for another go at Linux :) If people here are willing to assist, I'd like to actually run a test on two identical systems (both mine) comparing the ease of Windows and Ubuntu with common tasks/installs. hmm

1) Dual display in 4 lines in a config file (did it today http://www.pickledbushman.com/screenshots/xgl/wobbly_windows.jpg)
2) War 3, supprted by Cedega
3) I didnt have any hassles, got awsome driver support, sure you wont....just ...if uve got ATI.... dont expect to much magic, works best with nvidia
4) Guild Wars has cedega support
5) Browse in IE if you wish
6) Thats the tricky one, if ure doing dodge aspnets stuff, you can run vmware or do some advanted wine stuff, however, im not a coder and havent looked into this. If ure a c or php dev, ill feel right at home.

If ure in Cape Town, ill install your box
 
Nice summing up w1z4rd :) I'll take a look at what distros I can get from work tomorrow and make it a project for this week and ongoing.
 
I must say that I prefer to use Windows for games myself, but when doing some work, I prefer to use Linux (Smoothwall, Knoppix Live, Ubuntu, SuSE et al) when protecting my network, surfing bad sites and the such.

Was bitten once too many by surfing bad sites with Windows anyways, so it'll remain fun and games with Windows, and business with Linux for now.
