So besides talk of crime, early in the world cup we had talk of empty stadiums and then talk of a boring world cup as no goals were being scored.... well time for more egg on the face of those "realists".

Numbers are showing that attendance for the world cup will be over 3,000,000. This has only happened in two previous world cups. America and Germany. So where are those empty stadiums and the subsequent embarrassment that was being referred to?

Let's talk goals... a total of 142 goals have been scored so far in this world cup. There have been 63 matches. That gives us an average of 2.3 goals per match. How does that compare to past world cups?

1990 FIFA World Cup Italy: Goals Scored: 115 (average 2.2 per match)
1994 FIFA World Cup USA: Goals Scored: 141 (average 2.7 per match)
1998 FIFA World Cup France: Goals Scored: 171 (average 2.7 per match)
2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan: Goals Scored: 161 (average 2.5 per match)
2006 FIFA World Cup Germany: Goals Scored: 147 (average 2.3 per match)

So again, not bad. Hardly the boring world cup some were referring to.

No matter how it is spun... this has been a great world cup!

So you are on here admitting that the Germany WC was better than ours?

Lance how could you?

You can thank Germany for all the goals :p

I'm still pissed with FIFA with regard to the tickets. When I went to the Netherlands vs Cameroon game, FIFA's website reported the game was completely sold out, but the attendance at the game was around 63 000, leaving roughly 5 000 seats empty. Whether this is because people decided not to pitch up (highly unlikely) or the fact that there were indeed 5 000 seats unsold, it is still unacceptable.

Um..... that of course depends on whether your definition of "better" boils down to the match attendance figures only.... clutch away at those straws, Pitbull, clutch away...

Yip, ticketing issues are probably one of the main reasons we didn't pip Germany in attendance. For most Durban matches I had friends on Facebook begging for any tickets after trying the official channels and having no luck. Many were left disappointed even after their online begging.

No, did the players there get robbed?

*Just an indication that there is more to it than just attendence and goals (which is currently tied at 147 each I think:o) ;)

OK, let's ignore the numbers being referred to in here and turn it into a crime thread (although there is already one I started about that... :rolleyes: )

....

Uruguayan soccer officials have declined to pursue a theft case after allegations emerged that one of their own may have been responsible.

South Africa police spokesman Leon Engelbrecht said after receiving a report that about $12,000 was missing from two of the delegation's Cape Town hotel rooms several hours before Uruguay played France on Friday, authorities reviewed hotel surveillance camera footage.

"There's a big possibility that a member of the Uruguayan delegation was involved," Engelbrecht said Sunday.

But the sane amongst us are already aware of the cheating, lying, and obviously stealing ways of the Uruguayans.

DURBAN: Three members of Greece's World Cup squad had cash stolen from their hotel rooms in the northern suburbs of Durban, a team official said on Thursday.

Team spokesman Michael Tsapidis said the players were not upset by the theft at the Beverly Hills Hotel and that they were "extremely satisfied" with the way the hotel had responded to the incident.

“In our opinion this is not such a big deal. This incident is something that could happen anywhere in the world," he told a news conference.

Oh, and then the English had their underwear stolen but all goods were returned and the suspects caught and prosecuted.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) welcomes the undertaking by the Minister of Finance, Pravin Gordhan to meet with the Auditor-General and the Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA) to discuss the R130-million splurge on World Cup tickets by government departments and state entities. The DA applauds the fact that the Finance Minister has decided to act on these numerous instances of indulgent spending which have been uncovered as a direct result of our questions to parliament. We trust that the discussions will result in the purchase of World Cup tickets by government departments and state entities may be declared as fruitless and wasteful expenditure, following which sanctions as listed in the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA) will be taken against those responsible for approving the purchase.

In reply to a DA parliamentary question the Minister of Finance has revealed that the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) spent R2 348 896.50 on 300 tickets to the FIFA World Cup.

he DTI claims that it is "outrageously untrue and misleading" to say that the Department wasted R16.7-million on tickets, because they actually only wasted R4.7-million. Firstly, it is ridiculous that the DTI thinks that nearly R5-mllion wastage on tickets is somehow acceptable in a way that R16.7-million is not. Secondly, the DA has merely restated in our correspondence on this subject precisely what the minister of trade and industry stated in his response to our parliamentary question: that the DTI spent R4.7-million, while the Industrial Development Corporation, a state entity that was listed as falling under the DTI, spent R12-million.

;)

Ahh, yes, if I stand on my head, close one eye, squint slightly and read those stories I can totally see their relevance to the attendance figures and average goals per match mentioned in the original post.

no .... no ..... not at all.

R130-million splurge on World Cup tickets by government departments and state entities.

R130 mil / R1500 = (+/-) 87000 tickets

no ... you are damn right. It is NOTHING RELATING TO WHAT YOU SAID ....... sorry my bad.

Good night! (go to sleep now) :whistle:

no .... no ..... not at all:

Have you ever thought about just saying what you actually mean? Why some random reference to a DA website. Then the posting of excerpts from articles. Are we supposed to be playing charades here?

...and your maths fails a little as your second quote shows 300 tickets costing R2.3mill.... we also get the numbers being disputed in your third quote. So let's wait for the facts to emerge before you throw in your speculations that the government filled all the stadiums.

So good night!

EDIT : Further investigation shows the number of tickets to be far lower than the 87,000 put forward by yourself (purely for sensationalist effect I realise)...

* Department of Trade and Industry: R 16 738 960 on approximately 3054 tickets
* Department of Science and Technology: R 25 200 on 10 tickets
* Department of Tourism: R 918 973 on 180 tickets
* Department of Public Service and Administration: R 65 400 on 25 tickets
* Department of Communications: spent R 5.2 million on 2786 tickets
* Eskom (Department of Public Enterprises): R 12 million on tickets
* PetroSA (Department of Energy) - R12,5 million on 1000 tickets (revealed today)
* CEF (Department of Energy) - R1,4 million (revealed today)

@Lance What's wrong with you bud? As the American saying goes: if you are already in a hole and what to get out, STOP DIGGING ! :D Yes, the stadiums were sold out indeed (or almost sold out) BUT, FIFA got punished big time. Quite a percentage of tickets (fifa is lip tight about the actual number) went for a bit over 10Euro just to 'get people in'. The result was, people blowing vulvazelas every time SB farthed :D Further, SA government subsidised tickets played a role like never before! Fifa learned a lesson the hard way. I can assure you, the bitter taste will remain in their mouths for a looong time. My guess is - no SWC hosting for a Subsaharan country anymore - in your lifetime. How sad :(

What kind of crap is this???? 10 Euro??? You've got to be kidding me. People were paying thousands for tickets just to get a chance to see a game.

Yes, sadly thousands of tickets got dumped at South African Rand 100 which is just just over Euro10. Most were sold thru local companies not related to the sport. For example, a little known meat processing company in Humansdorp (Eastern Cape) recieved a week or so before the game, 100 tickets at 100Rand each to disperse to their employes (for the match Germany - Serbia). The company only has a staff of 77 people. 12 Tickets were never used. I am still in possession of 2 :D (the face value was just under 1000USD each ! ! !) And sadly this story was not a isolated incident. Sad but thrue. The real situation will eventually be revealed over the coming years . . .

doesn't matter, we will see. ;)

One of the numbers that actually opens a huge can of worms is the ONLY 200000 additional tourists for this SWC as opposed to last year without the SWC. Now I wonder where the number of 500000 comes from. Nice to be able to "cook"/see the numbers as suited when it suits the agenda..

The trouble is we are supposed to believe these conspiracy theorists who know someone who knew someone who said they heard of tickets being sold for cheap but we are not meant to believe the reports we read. Some little anonymous pessimist is supposedly a far better source of reliable information :rolleyes:

I am awaiting the responses relating to the goals scored. I suppose the government offered an incentive to all the foreign teams too if they scored more goals as they were concerned about the embarrassment that may be caused if this was the lowest scoring world cup!

And as for Grhardt's incredible breaking news about me not seeing another world cup in Sub-Saharan Africa in my lifetime... NO WAY? You have got to be kidding? I honestly was under the impression that it'd be here again after Brazil? Damn it. You ruined my illusion! Seriously, dude, most of us REALISTS are fully aware that it will not be held near us again in our lifetimes. That should be obvious even to the least intelligent amongst us. Perhaps you need to realise that not all of us on here are 12 years old (in which case we might stand a slightly better chance of seeing another one but still unlikely!)

Yeah. Another issue I picked up is - some tourists come into SA more then once! Although the air tickets are quite expensive, the high crime levels scarred the more affluent visitors. They basicaly came to the match they wanted to see and left the very next day only to return for the quarter, semi or final. The SA government counted this visitors twice. In reality South Africa lost revenue should the tourists have stayed for the entire periode. While this is happening at every world cup, this time around it raised eyebrows but the shear numbers. Mind you, less opportunity for criminals. Needless to say, the Airways companies smiled from ear to ear :D
