More world cup numbers...

Yeah. Another issue I picked up is - some tourists come into SA more then once! Although the air tickets are quite expensive, the high crime levels scarred the more affluent visitors. They basicaly came to the match they wanted to see and left the very next day only to return for the quarter, semi or final. The SA government counted this visitors twice. In reality South Africa lost revenue should the tourists have stayed for the entire periode. While this is happening at every world cup, this time around it raised eyebrows but the shear numbers. Mind you, less opportunity for criminals. Needless to say, the Airways companies smiled from ear to ear :D

Can I have a turn sucking that thumb of yours that you get your information from?

Also I fail to see where I referred to number of tourists visiting the country in my original post. I again fail to see the relevance of this to stadium attendance figures and goals scored. Damn, you guys are becoming laughable the way your throw any possible, thumb sucked negative at any thread relating positive stories about the world cup.

But yeah, thanks again for enlightening me earlier about never seeing another world cup in Sub-Saharan Africa in my life time.

The trouble is we are supposed to believe these conspiracy theorists who know someone who knew someone who said they heard of tickets being sold for cheap but we are not meant to believe the reports we read. Some little anonymous pessimist is supposedly a far better source of reliable information

I am awaiting the responses relating to the goals scored. I suppose the government offered an incentive to all the foreign teams too if they scored more goals as they were concerned about the embarrassment that may be caused if this was the lowest scoring world cup!

And as for Grhardt's incredible breaking news about me not seeing another world cup in Sub-Saharan Africa in my lifetime... NO WAY? You have got to be kidding? I honestly was under the impression that it'd be here again after Brazil? Damn it. You ruined my illusion! Seriously, dude, most of us REALISTS are fully aware that it will not be held near us again in our lifetimes. That should be obvious even to the least intelligent amongst us. Perhaps you need to realise that not all of us on here are 12 years old (in which case we might stand a slightly better chance of seeing another one but still unlikely!)

Glad to see we agree on something on this Sunday morning. Please Lance, I understand your support but sometimes seeing things for what they are, will get us further. Regardless, I for one had a great time in SA :D What I would have like to see more was the involvement of the africans. Not the top cream but the ones who really needed the money. Most tourist I know of made use of facilities run by Europeans and only indirectly helped locals with their presence. What good does it serve to have a new road if 2/3 of the locals do not own a vehicle? Indirectly it will help but who did profit the most? I don't mean any insults or harm to no one. It may not be as great as Lance portrait it or as bad as I highlight it (had to ballance his reporting), however SOUTH AFRICA IS A BEAUTIFULL PLACE :D (it has its issues though . . .)

It is really sickening how there is still so much negativity regarding the world cup even though it was held in our own country. If tickets were sold at lower prices, so what? It just means people who could afford it had the chance to attend. I think we had a great world bar a few incidents. Mybb is probably been read all over the world. And we keep putting the country down for the world to see.

I never thought it would be so good. I also think that comparisons to other WC's is silly. You can't
compare it to Europe. If the have to travel to the stadions they can use a Tram. They got all transport
facilities in all big Cities. Millions of soccer fans which can go home after the game. Does'nt matter
where they play. But we are 10 000 Km here away. We have shown that it was an incredible 64 Games.
One more to come, so 63 played. Hardly any incident, which really surprised me and all my friends.
Excellent job by all involved. I also prefered the commentators of SABC1 because SS had too many
adverts in between.

Yes, sadly thousands of tickets got dumped at South African Rand 100 which is just just over Euro10. Most were sold thru local companies not related to the sport. For example, a little known meat processing company in Humansdorp (Eastern Cape) recieved a week or so before the game, 100 tickets at 100Rand each to disperse to their employes (for the match Germany - Serbia). The company only has a staff of 77 people. 12 Tickets were never used. I am still in possession of 2 :D (the face value was just under 1000USD each ! ! !) And sadly this story was not a isolated incident. Sad but thrue. The real situation will eventually be revealed over the coming years . . .

More BS on ticket prices - I went to a first round game with a category one ticket - face value US$160.

OK, let's ignore the numbers being referred to in here and turn it into a crime thread (although there is already one I started about that... )

....

But the sane amongst us are already aware of the cheating, lying, and obviously stealing ways of the Uruguayans.

Oh, and then the English had their underwear stolen but all goods were returned and the suspects caught and prosecuted.

No need to quote multiple stories we have all read already. I will ask you again:
Did any of the teams get robbed or attacked in Germany?

Simple YES/NO will do.

Uruguay didn't qualify for Germany 2006 :p.

So true. But unfortunately as is the case with most naysayers they do not accept any answers that do not suit their needs, so you are limited to a yes or no answer.

Of course with the "media lock down" and hiding of all negative stories relating to 2006 by the German government (yip, I decided to borrow from an argument used by these same people when it comes to crime stats for 2010) it is almost impossible to find out if there were indeed any incidents in 2006.

So sorry Pitbull I am not able to give you a yes or no answer as I was not there and do not have a contact who knows the German chief of police in 2006!

A further update for you Pitbulll.... I have not done extensive searching yet but a brief look did turn up this :

Ghanaian Fans Burgled In Hannover

Soccer News of Thursday, 15 June 2006

Ghanaian fans lodging at the Tryp Centro Hotel, Oberhausen, returned from the Hannover Stadium to learn with shock that some rooms of theirs had been burgled.

So far, one person has reported the loss of over $6,000 and 2,000 euros from his luggage while three others had their jeans, shirts and trousers stolen with some also reporting the theft of their gari and ****o.

The theft occurred on the second, third and fourth floors of the hotel and at a time that the fans had gone to Hannover to watch the Black Stars and the Azzuri play the opening Group E match in which the Black Stars lost by 2-0 margin.

The affected fans were those who arrived in Germany on Monday and travelled for more than six hours to and from the Hannover Stadium after the match.

The fans arrived back at the hotel at about 4:30a.m. German time and 2:30a.m. Ghana time. The Criminal Police in Oberhausen have started investigations into the incident and have given statement forms to those whose rooms were burgled to submit their complaints to the police.

The police also came into the affected rooms to take finger prints and promised to work around the clock to get the culprits.

Some Ghanaians were astounded to know that an individual had in his possession such large sums of money and described it as an indictment of security personnel at the Kotoka International Airport in Accra.

Mr Thomas Sowah, Head of Public Relations of Scancom Ghana Limited, who sponsored 200 Ghanaian fans to come and cheer the Black Stars, told the Daily Graphic that although his room was also burgled, nothing was actually stolen.

He, however, said he was emotionally stressed up to find out that in his absence some people entered his room to search his personal belongings.

He said he would not want to blame the hotel that much because persons lodging there were told to submit their valuables to the reception for safe-keeping.

Since the theft, most of the Ghanaians have submitted their return tickets to the hotel for safekeeping to avoid any embarrassment.

But of course this will not satisfy you and you want it to be the actual teams....
