Most delicious fruit

Is there a place to buy Durian fruit either fresh or in frozen form? My dad seen the fruit on TV with the cooking shows and even the youtubers eating it. He told me he would like to eat it... i did contact a few asian places within 10km from me (they sell like dumplings , noodles, sauces etc. but said they don't have the fruit .. mostly veg / greens)

Would be nice if i could get durian and maybe another 1 or 2 fruits that we don't normally get on the shelves as usual in the shops.

No chance. They smell awful and are even banned from airlines (as well as hotel room etc).

The last time I saw fresh Durian in SA was at Woodlands Boulevard in Pretoria, but it was years back.

Wow. I'm very surprised. Was it shrink wrapped or something? The smell is truly ridiculous and in the supermarkets I've been in in Indonesia where they have it on sale it carries over a fair distance too stinking out the whole place.

The durian fruit smell has been compared to garbage, raw sewage and sweaty socks! In fact, durian smells so pungent that it has famously been banned from public transit, airports and hotels in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong and other locales

I've had it in Bangkok. It indeed smells like garbage and the texture is slimy and not nice at all. Could not eat it

They were fresh whole durians at Food Lovers Market. They cut a few open and let people try them and the rest they were selling. I tried searching for any info if they still get them in, but could only find a post from 2016 :crying: I personally saw them there again around 2019 just before the pandemic.

I guess with their reputation there would be a lot of people wanting to try, but gawd knows how they got them here. Mind you, the locals don't seem to mind the smell at all. I got back to my car in Borneo and the driver had loaded about half a dozen in the back from a roadside vendor whilst I was in a shop. Jibbers but the smell was unbearable so I told him no chance and he had to chuck them, but still the honk was their for a couple of hours driving back to camp :sick:

Book a trip to Malaysia.

The closest you might get are the chocolates or other stuff made from it.

Yeah people who grew up with it are perfectly use to it and see it as normal every day stuff.

For me the smell itself isn’t so bad, it’s the burps that linger for hours that are the real issue making you think your intestines may be going.

Yeah, the toffees are easy to find. I managed to get these at Cape Grand China mall in Cape Town last month.

I'm not a durian person, but my son is and he says the flavour is very similar to the actual fruit. The smell was definitely there as they stank up the place for hours.

will go check it out. i was hoping to get a fresh or frozen version of the real thing.
 
For exotic fruit wood apple and custard apples are delicious but rare to find.

Please let me know if you find any wood apple fruit in SA. I want to try to grow a tree. I brought some seeds back from India yonks ago but they never sprouted :crying:

Tried the fruit years ago in Mozambique but haven't seen them here in SA. Have seen the seeds being sold on eBay.

dragonfruit one can get at foodlovers, is there any other exotic fruits worth a try and where to buy ?

Cape town areas or that one can order online ?
