Hi there

I have a problem with my motherboard, and I'm wondering if anyone can help.

System: Gigabyte z77 d3h rev 1.0
Intel i7 3770
8gb g.skill sniper ram
intel 240gb ssd
samsung 5400 hdd 1tb
Gigabyte R9 280x graphics
Corsair m12ii 750w

I built the PC end 2013 I think... It worked perfectly for a few years until early last year the pc wouldn't turn on... I took it to a PC shop, and the guy used the back up bios to reflash the main bios. The PC worked and then failed again... The back up bios also does not run my graphics card, so the earliest version that I use is f18 and that seems to get my pc running for 5 days to 14 days with no problems, and suddenly it will just turn off again and I have to repeat the process... Removing components, reflashing with the back up bios, flashing with f18 again... putting in my components again...

So now, my suspicions are that the back up bios is corrupted as well, because I tested it without flashing the f18; while it recovers the main bios, some letters on the screen go missing, and come back... and when I left the pc on it corrupted again in 10 minutes...

So I've been doing this for the last 6 months, but it's not really sustainable... and it can take anywhere from 20 minutes, to 3 hours to fix... using multiple techniques trying to reset the bios...

Ive downloaded cpuid, and hwmonitor but I don't know what to look out for...
So can anyone please help me?

Bin that gigabyte rubbish and get a new one.

Might be very difficult to find 1155 motherboards.

It seems there is a problem with backup BIOS, as you have to flash the main BIOS afterwards. You should perhaps re-flash a backup BIOS.

I don't understand one thing. Did you try to update BIOS with a newer version and found compatibility problems with your GPU? If so, you should also flash backup BIOS with the same version as you main BIOS. Having two BIOS versions is a receipe for a disaster as Gigabyte used to make changes how BIOS is storing its internal data. When backup BIOS is activated for some reason, it might destroy data of the main BIOS and in reverse.

There are couple new BIOS releases since F18, all focusing on system stability, so I suggest to try the latest one, but synchronise backup BIOS with the main one.

Okay, I can try flashing the back up bios, I just don't know exactly how to do that...

I think it's more of a recovery bios?

I have tried the later versions but it ends up breaking even quicker...

Perhaps I should try get another motherboard...

Sorry, I meant Recovery BIOS. I found sometime ago how to flash recovery BIOS, will check whether there are some saved URL's.

Did you replace the backup battery? If not get a new one.

Thanks, you guys are legends.

I'm going to try new battery and flashing the recovery... and I'll update with the results.

Not keen on downgrading , can only find h77s online.

Replaced the battery, flashed both roms with latest bios.

Seems to be back from the dead once more :D

So the PC was running so smoothly, and Yesterday it died again.

I think it has to do with the CPU fan. IE what happens is the PC powers on, the case fan spins and continues to spin at full speed and then shuts off; the CPU fan spins very very slowly, and then even moves a little backward when the pc shuts off. It's also been making a slight noise for some time.

Would a broken CPU fan prevent a PC from booting?

Please explain. It should stop together with a case fan when PC shuts down.

A noise indicates trouble, slow rotating is giving indication of failure. It should start at full speed for a second, possibly reducing speed later. Rotate it manually when PC is off. Do it make few seconds spin or it feels sticky and stops immediately?

I've used my PC without a CPU fan - It worked fine. I had a similar thing where I had weird problems with my RAM and my drives not being read properly.

Okay, so it was working... Then same thing again.

If it happens again stick a cross to the pc and call an exorcist :D

I called in the exorcist; but some crazy thing happened where an electric vortex opened up; he told me to leave. When i came back he was just sitting there, opening his eyes; and breathing a bit, then closing his eyes and repeat. My PC was working though, but sadly it's broken again. The exorcist is in an institution now.

Anyway! I think I figured out the cause of the problem. Windows 10! Windows 10 automatically downloaded itsself when I was running windows 8.1; it was only a few days afterwards that my pc started this problem. When I initially googled this, it was immediately dismissed; but over the passed 2 years there are quite a few people claiming that windows 10 was the cause of their motherboard breaking.

So I'm going to revert back to windows 8.1; and I'm going to see if the problem persists. I am just unsure whether it is a continual bios corruption from windows 10, or whether it has corrupted my bios beyond repair; in which case my next option is to import two bios chips to solder. Any advice?

on a side note: I had a SSD 128gb that was 6 months old; and that also bombed out a couple months into this bios problem. It doesn't even detect through the bios - and I lost the PoP. Anything I can do regarding this?

Who did you buy it from and how did you pay for it (cash, eft, cc)?

Bought it from a guy on Carbonite. He bought it from incredible connection and sold it to me a week afterwards; he gave me the PoP and everything. I paid cash; Really stupid to have lost it on my part.

Stuff like that you scan or take a picture of and email it to yourself.
