Hi there

I've got two motherboards whose caps need to be replaced. One is an ancient Pentium2 400MHz mobo (which I plan to use for a server) and the other is an Celeron 850MHz mobo (which I want to build up for my daughter's use).

As I'm short of money, I'll appreciate any help here.

Regards

well caps are very cheap as long as its not surface mount caps, then you can forget it.You will heat the stuff to shyte.Get the values and buy at any electronic store.Use sucker and min heat solder and you a electronic engineer man,go for it.

I thought that the capacitor leakage problem only occurs with more recent motherboards (1.2GHz and faster)? Both of the CPUs that you mentioned draw considerably less current than the later generation ones so just make sure that this is a confirmed problem with these older boards. What kind of problems are you experiencing with those motherboards? Has material actually started leaking out of the capacitors on both boards? When were those motherboards manufactured as the problem only appeared in 2002?

Phone for some prices for the replacement parts to determine whether or not it's going to be worthwhile to replace the caps. You may be able to buy a secondhand motherboard including CPU for less than the cost of the replacement capacitors plus petrol. Take a look on Bidorbuy.

If you think that it's going to be worthwhile I would personally look at the 105C Rubycon range from Avnet - you may be able to find exact size matches, otherwise you could end up with parts that don't fit exactly. You don't want to replace low quality capacitors with even lower quality ones so only buy from reputable suppliers like Avnet or Electrocomp etc. The problem capacitors are usually low ESR types such as the Rubycon ones. Normal electrolytics may not be suitable.

Study the dimensions carefully

This company often sells very cheap motherboards. Phone first to enquire. Usually no CPUs though.
