So my old computer is finally giving up the ghost. It's been a long time coming. I have a decent GFX card (but the bottleneck because of the system is atrocious), hard drive, case and power unit. I just need the board, chip and memory. Can anyone give me some advice on what to get? Budget in the 4k range. I do a fair bit of photoshop stuff so think I will need to get about 8 gigs of memory too.

Best
Paul

MB: R649 - MSI Intel H81M-P33 - http://www.takealot.com/msi-intel-h81m-p33-h81-chipset-motherboard-socket-1150/PLID28620999 (mATX)
RAM: R820 - Transcend DDR3-1600 8GB - http://www.takealot.com/transcend-ddr3-1600-desktop-dimm-cl11-8gb/PLID32837337
CPU: R2599 - Core i5-4460 Haswell Quad-Core 3.2GHz - http://www.wootware.co.za/intel-bx8...intel-hd-graphics-4600-desktop-processor.html
TOTAL: R4098

Alternative CPU options in order of price & performance should your budget allow:
R2964 - i5-4590 - http://www.wootware.co.za/intel-bx8...socket-22nm-quad-core-3-3ghz-desktop-cpu.html
R3207 - I5-4690 - http://www.takealot.com/intel-core-i5-4690-processor-3-50ghz-6mb-cache-skt-1150/PLID32732299

If you need front case USB3 ports look at http://www.takealot.com/msi-intel-h81-p33-atx-motherboard/PLID34158493 (Full size ATX)

Only specified a single 8GB ram stick as with photoshop you might want more ram later so there is one dimm slot open.

Thanks Ponder. Would this be OK for a bit of gaming too? I don't game as much as I used to, but would like to buy Alien Isolation and a couple of other new releases. MY GFX card should be ok.

Yeah it will be more than fine. If you can stretch your budget a bit then get the i5-4690 due to the higher clock rate but it's not a must.

I have a very similar setup as my gaming rig as do many others here. I have that exact same MB, i5-4690, 2x4GB & GTX 960 gpu which means at 1080p resolution I can play most games at high to ultra settings at decent fps.

What GPU do you have?

EDIT: If you wanna save some bucks you can order an i5-4590 CPU from PotterH on Carbonite forums for R1600, it's brand new with warranty but you would have to buy a heatsink/fan for it as it's a tray item. Sorry forgot to mention this earlier, can save yourself a small bundle here!!!

Maybe, I haven't tried. Tray CPU's carry only one year warranty, instead of 3 or 5 years boxed, right?

I have no idea but CPU's never die. I've never had a CPU die on me in my life and I still have some old parafin driven ones lying around that work, ie socket 478 etc.

It's the last thing I would worry about failing.

I have old Dell laptop (D600) with me, Pentium M 735. Mobo is repaired (for the MyBB member, BTW), but CPU is dead. It didn't die by its own, but top MOSFET of the core voltage regulator failed, passing full power supply voltage to the CPU. Top hardware brand, but I can't find CPU. If it the truth that CPU never dies, I should be able to find CPU, right?

Plenty of those on ebay and similar places.
