Neither will support your current core 2 quad. Why are you replacing your motherboard?

i am doing an upgrade bit by bit..wont be able to get a new processor till next year sometime...currently have have gigabyte G33M - DS2R could this support an i7 or i5? maybe could get a Processor now and the mother board next year

No, core 2 quad is on the LGA775 socket, all the new stuff from Intel is either LGA1156 or LGA1136. Since you cant afford to upgrade now anyway just wait a while, Intel is releasing their latest and greatest in January (LGA1155) and then you can get the whole lot at once.

What? That's 3 or 4 different socket types? Why?

I want to go back to AMD. :(

AM2 and AM3. Finished and klaar.

Money making schemes! Why arent there more suppliers in SA that offer AMD? Most of the distributors dont offer AMD cpu options.. Intel intel intel.. :/

AMD will also release a new socket next year, called Bulldozer.

Currently AMD has 1 socket (AM3) and Intel 2 (1156 & 1366).

That's exactly what I thought. i7 chips are damn expensive and if you want to build a decent pc with matching ram, gpu etc, it will cost you like R8k easy. So many sockets...

There are plenty of people who sell AMD? Take2, wootware, kalahari, sybartic, computersonly etc etc...

Only idiot place that doesn't support AMD (Because their staff are idiots) is PC Zone in Durban. Their salesman irritate me alot. That rant is for another day.

Here's a nice mobo. :p

Don't think for one second if amd was on top or doing well they would not have changed sockets, i recall a time when amd changed sockets just as much. 939 7xx. It is all about money, intel being top dog could do it amd had some shocking cpu's out and they could not have done it.

So let's not pretend like amd is looking out for people who buy their goods. Now that amd is flying again change of socket is in order of course.

The change of socket for AMD is long overdue actually. AM3 was a mildly upgraded AM2 which was launched almost 5 years ago.

Oh well then........

Strange how there isn't more competition in that market?
