Hi all,

I'm in ZA to visit my parents. I normally "service" their PC on my visits.

When in last visited in April their 384 kbps ADSL line was working very well.

ADSL line & isp = Telkom

However, browsing today was virtually impossible so I have dug around in the router and discovered the following:
-Sync is still at 384 kbps ... i.e. the Telkom speed doubling hasnt happened.
-I can ping the Gateway IP address from within the router: 41.243.216.1
-I CANNOT ping the DNSs in the router: 196.43.38.190 196.43.42.190 ... 100% dropped packets. (This may explain why I cant even open hellkom.co.za's home page. Google ZA still works but maybe because of cached DNS on the PC. I cant open any international sites.)
-Mybroadbands speed tester is giving me: 0.1 mbps down and 0.1 mbs up locally, zilch internationally

So I have two questions:
What should the DNS servers be?
What do I do to trigger the 1 mbps speed upgrade?

I would phone Telkom directly but I still have awefull memories of them from years ago before I left ZA ... so I thought this forum would be the most efficient way to get things fixed.

:D

Thanks for any assistance ...

(Telkom ... the gift that keeps giving even when you have left ZA permanently :wtf: )

I use Google's DNS servers : 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4

Regarding the upgrade, Telkom is doing it in phases.. So not sure which areas are targeted 1st, guess you will have to call them :)

Wow ... Helkom expects you to do a speed test using an FTP session ... welkom to the 1980's. Obviously a flash based speed tester like MyBs is too futuristic for them :D

"Welkom to Telkom Internet your Internet Service Provider for Life" .... perish the thought.

"Thankyou for you patience we are aware of your call ...."

/me grabs a large cup of Horlicks and settles in for a world record attempt at holding on for Hellkom tech "support"

Parents have a netgear DG834GU v5 ... I wonder if its worth updating the firmware?

I can understand international sites being slow ... the hellkom monopoly on the atlantic cable ... but why the f**k are the ZA sites so slow... Beggars belief.

Do a factory reset on the modem and start all over again... as long as you have the correct UID/password combos!

I think I will do that ... Ive backed up the original router cfg.

All I need to rebuild after the hard reset is the uname: online270.... and password combo?

myB international speed test results:
0.05 mpbs
0.08 mbps

its like a horror movie :D

Right Im going to do that now. Thanks for the assistance. I dont know how you people keep sane in ZA having to deal with Hellkom ;)

And do the head-desk routine. Repeatedly.

Until the issue is fixed.

Are you sure it's not malware clogging up the line?
