So explain to me why they give me a phone worth R2000 for free if I sign up for a Topup 200 AND give me R200 airtime every month? Are you getting a phone worth R2000 after buying R4800 of prepaid airtime? No.

What you fail to take into account, are the call rates on these packages. In some instances, call rates are up to R1.80 per minute. Compare this to prepaid of 66-79c and you are paying double per minute. The pain is not so bad if you do not use more than the included R200 airtime, but if you do like I would for business, then every minute extra is going to be billed to you at double prepaid voice rates.

Only Telkom contract packages bundled with a phone are starting to look competitve to prepaid because you can buy voice bundles at prepaid rates per minute. Vodacom, MTN and Cell C: it is not cheaper to contract, rather than buying your phone for cash. The only exclusion is flagship devices (R10k+) on premium contracts like Vodacom Smart etc.

Prepaid + middle range / previous generation cash phone is ALWAYS cheaper.

Thankfully the last thing I do on my phone is make calls. In fact I hate it.

I ran all of the numbers - my account brain even made a spreadsheet comparing prepaid versus contract 9I am not an account but love crunching numbers). Compared to the Smart Large package I was on, buying a handset for cash and then going prepaid has saved me big bucks. The R4000 I spent on my S5 (R2500 used from sale of S4) has long been settled by the difference between R800pm Smart Large and the R150pm I spend on prepaid voice and data.

The only contract I will take is something like the current heavily discounted P8 Lite TM Deal of the month - 1GB of data + phone @R139pm is a bargain but I will rather wait for a P9 lite deal later.

Sorry, we have gone badly off topic.

I still really like the Moto G4 Plus though - I am after a stock android experience so I am still tempted to sell my S5 and buy one. My only worry is cracking the screen - here in SA there is zero support to replace the glass

Is there a financial justification to buy the G4 Plus over the G4? Is the slightly better camera and fingerprint reader worth the R650 premium?

I need a good dual SIM phone. I know this is OT, but what is the best deal around? Redmi 2?

If you take the average lifespan of a smartphone (730 days/24months) you end up paying 89c per day for the extra features (R650 ÷ 730).

I'd go for the Plus.

@Roux, depends what you want to use it for I guess. I have a dual SIM Redmi Note 2 and couldn't be happier. It's no Moto G, but for the price I am very happy.

My Moto G XT1032 is still doing duty in the hands of my mum after 2 years and 7 months. Battery life is still excellent and it runs as smooth as a 1GB Quad Core will with Lollipop

Every review I have read where they say "spend the bit more and get the Plus" they say "because of the 3GB ram. Orange really should be offering a 3GB Plus model instead of the 2GB. IMO, because dollar difference between the G4 and G4 Plus is $50 and that is the rand difference between the 2 on their site but without the extra GB

Thanks, Incredible Deception has the Redmi 2 for R1799 now and I read it is getting Lollipop soon. This is for my wife, I had her test the Vodafone Prime 7 on over a 2 month period as a daily phone, in general she liked it, but some things on even the low end Smart Kicka 2 (Smart First 7) is better than on the Prime 7. It's time for a change now.

You could get her the Redmi Note 3. That's a solid phone with a big battery and great camera, large screen and fingerprint reader. I'm using the Redmi Note 2 for 2 months and the only issue I have with it is the battery life. It lasts a day on medium usage.

No need to pay a premium for the Redmi Note 3 just grab a Xiaomi powerbank off Takealot.

why carry an extra device if you dont have to?
Was defending my purchase of the Note 2 this morning :D but don't think battery life will be a problem. Miui's got some great power saving features. Installed Miui 8 now and will keep an eye on it the next week.

Seems like they screwed up SMS-MT on your MSISDN. Give them a call and have them fix it.

Lenovo really stuffed it all up. My Moto G3 is now behind a cheap Vodafone Smart Kicka with the security patch level.
