Hi

I bought myself the superb Moto X when I was in the US in Nov. Sadly today I dropped the phone and cracked the screen! I'm sourcing a new screen in the US which will set me back around $250 with shipping. ouch! A good reason not to buy phones that are not available locally! I need a reputable and very skilled cell shop in Jhb that can do the actual labor of replacing the screen as it's technically a challenge. Any recommendations?

$250? Ouch.

Best I can recommend is SMARTLab. Though, beware, make a note of all issues being experienced with the phone to ensure that they do not remove some piece of functionality. A friend had an experience where they had removed / lost the microphone on his Blackberry Z10 when it was merely sent for an assessment for a cracked LCD (though, it was done through Cell C).

Isn't it cheaper to source one off Ebay? Just make sure it's a OEM part. I got a new bezel/screen (not LCD) for my daughters Haiwei Y300 after she dropped it and it cracked for R160 including shipping. MTN wanted R640 which is crazy considering the phone cost R999.

BTW I am jealous. I got a first gen Moto X and although I still love it to bits I wouldn't mind a newer Moto like the Droid Turbo:o

or alibaba

i bought the oneplus one instead of this phone. i wanted the bamboo back but seemed to be a case of lifting that i thought i couldn't handle for the price. the oneplus one is not cheap, but i fell your your pain.

Are you sure about the price? What is the exact model number of the phone?

Usually I buy from eBay....e.g. http://www.ebay.com/itm/USA-Front-A...313?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35d44de4c1

Yes, If I lived in the US, the replacement is $150-$200 (I checked with Motorola) The thing is I have to replace the whole LCD Display Touch Digitizer & screen unit. I could replace the screen only but teardown and disassembly vidoes I've seen are all saying its extremely difficult to change screen only with high likelihood of collateral damage. So you are right that the screen alone is around $20-30 but I don't want to try replacing screen only for fear of causing further problems. I have checked Ali Express and ebay and the average price is $220-$250. Then add shipping to SA. I paid $675 for a personalised leather backed and engraved phone so I dont want to bin it. Sigh...

Get the glass and pay one of those repair shops to fix it. If it doesn't work out, then look for a screen

The screen is bonded to the digitizer, so he'd have to replace the entire unit. It's why its usually very difficult to impossible to only replace the screen glass.

This ^ . My nexus 7 and 4 the entire assembly had to be bought. But cost me less than $100 in both cases

Besides, Gorilla Glass isn't sold to consumers :D

And I've seen those teardown videos where people attempt to remove the glass from the digitiser. It's an awful, excruciating process, that usually does not pan out.

Painful too...when a sliver of metal strengthened cracked glass gets under your skin

I'm willing to pay up to avoid unnecessary pain. The other thing is there are lots of cheaper display units costs around 150 dollars but they're shipping from China (Ali express) even some on Ebay that don't quite look the part. I can't guarantee that it's Gorilla glass 3. Not a chance I'm willing to take. It's a 3 month old phone in want it good as new to use for next 2 years. Will let you know my experiences.

get buyer protection on aliexpress and you should be sorted?

Says who? Hairdryer and piano wire. I did a note2 for a friend a week or 2 back.

Although when I attempted it on my Note2 I destroyed the lcd. It was my first attempt.

Only difference the new glass does not bond to the digitiser...

Still works the same after.

The guy I used had the film to bond it again
